Tafsir (Explanation):
The verse addresses the People of the Book who made false claims about the noble prophets of Allah. They alleged that Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), his son Isma'il (Ishmael), his son Ishaq (Isaac), his son Ya'qub (Jacob), and the prophets from the twelve tribes of Israel were all followers of Judaism or Christianity. This claim is utterly false and contradicts historical reality, for these prophets lived and passed away long before the Torah and the Gospel were revealed. How could they have been Jews or Christians when these religions did not yet exist in their revealed forms during their lifetimes?
Allah commands His Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) to challenge them: "Do you know better, or does Allah?" This is a powerful rhetorical question that leaves no room for argument. Allah, the All-Knowing, has testified in the Qur'an that Ibrahim and his progeny were pure monotheists (Hunafa) — Muslims submitting wholly to Allah's will. They were neither Jews nor Christians. So who possesses greater knowledge — the Creator of all things, or His creation?
Then Allah declares that there is no one more unjust than those who conceal a testimony they know to be true from Allah. The People of the Book had clear knowledge in their own scriptures that Ibrahim and his descendants were devoted servants of Allah, and they also knew that Muhammad (peace be upon him) was a true messenger. Yet they hid this truth out of arrogance, envy, and worldly desires. Concealing the truth after knowing it is a grave injustice — it is a betrayal of the trust Allah placed in them.
The verse concludes with a profound reassurance and warning: "And Allah is not unaware of what you do." Nothing escapes His knowledge. Every act of concealment, every false claim, every word spoken in arrogance — all are recorded and will be accounted for. This is both a comfort to the believers who uphold the truth and a stern warning to those who distort it.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse invites us to reflect on the purity of faith that the prophets embodied. They were not divided by sectarian labels — they were united in submission to the One True God. Islam is not a new religion but the continuation of the original message brought by all prophets, from Adam to Muhammad (peace be upon them all).
The greatest injustice is to know the truth and hide it. Today, the truth of Islam shines as clear as the sun. The Qur'an stands as an eternal miracle, preserved in its original language, calling humanity to worship Allah alone without partners. The message of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) confirms and completes the teachings of all previous prophets.
Let us not be among those who conceal the truth. Rather, let us be among those who proclaim it with wisdom and beautiful preaching. Allah sees all that we do — let our deeds be those that please Him. Embrace the pure monotheism of Ibrahim, submit to Allah as he did, and you will find peace in this life and success in the Hereafter. The door of repentance is open, and Allah's mercy encompasses all things. Do not delay — for Allah is not unaware of what you do.
