Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Kanzen (كَنزٌ): A treasure — a hidden, abundant wealth.
- Jannah (جَنَّةٌ): A garden or paradise — here meaning a lush orchard.
- Mas'hoor (مَّسْحُورًا): One who is bewitched or whose mind has been overcome by magic.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The disbelievers of Makkah, in their arrogance and stubbornness, continued to find fault with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) simply because he was a human being like them. They demanded: "Why was a treasure not cast down to him from the sky?" — meaning, why was he not given abundant wealth so that he would not need to walk through the markets seeking his livelihood? And they added: "Or why does he not have a garden from which he eats?" — a beautiful orchard that would provide for him and prove his special status?
These demands were not born of sincere seeking of truth, but rather of obstinate rejection. They refused to accept that Allah would choose a human messenger, despite this being the established pattern of all previous prophets. Their hearts were sealed with pride, so no sign would ever satisfy them.
Then Allah describes their ultimate transgression: "And the wrongdoers said: You follow none but a man bewitched." They accused the truthful Prophet — who brought the noblest message and the clearest guidance — of being a man whose mind had been overcome by magic. This was their final resort: when they could not refute the truth of his call, they attacked his person and claimed he was deluded.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this scene. The disbelievers demanded worldly treasures and gardens, yet the Prophet (peace be upon him) was given something far greater — the Qur'an, a living miracle that challenges humanity to produce even a single chapter like it. They sought material wealth, but he brought spiritual wealth that illuminates hearts and guides souls to eternal success.
These objections were not about genuine curiosity; they were excuses from hearts that had already decided to reject the truth. When a person truly seeks guidance, Allah opens their heart to accept the truth wherever it comes from. But when arrogance takes hold, even the clearest signs become objects of mockery.
Let this verse be a lesson for us: do not let worldly standards blind you from recognizing divine truth. The value of a message lies not in the wealth of its carrier, but in its authenticity and guidance. And let us thank Allah for sending us a merciful Prophet who, despite all these accusations, patiently conveyed the message and endured harm for our sake — so that we might be guided from darkness to light.
