Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Mal (مال): What is the matter with... / Why is it that...
  • Ya'kulu al-ta'am (يأكل الطعام): Eats food — indicating his human need for sustenance.
  • Yamshi fi al-aswaq (يمشي في الأسواق): Walks in the marketplaces — moving about for trade and livelihood.
  • Lawla (لولا): Why not... / If only... — a particle of reproach and objection.
  • Nadheer (نذير): A warner — one who warns people of consequences and calls them to truth.

Tafsir (Explanation):

The disbelievers of Makkah, in their arrogance and mockery, raised an objection against the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), saying: "What is the matter with this man who claims to be a messenger from Allah? He eats food just as we eat, and he walks through the marketplaces seeking his livelihood, just as we do. If he were truly a messenger, why does he not possess the qualities of an angel? Why has Allah not sent down an angel with him to accompany him and confirm his message, so that he might be a warner alongside him?"

Their words reveal a deep misunderstanding of the nature of prophethood. They imagined that a messenger of Allah must be a supernatural being, free from human needs and limitations. Yet, this very objection contains within it a profound truth: Allah chose His messengers from among human beings precisely so that they could relate to their people, share in their struggles, and serve as living examples of how to live righteously within the human condition. The Prophet's eating and walking in the markets were not signs of weakness — they were signs of his complete humanity, and his humanity was essential to his mission.

The fact that the Prophet (peace be upon him) ate food and walked in the markets was itself a demonstration of humility and accessibility. He did not isolate himself in a palace or claim divine privileges. Instead, he lived among the people, shared their joys and sorrows, and attended to their needs. This is the beauty of Islam: its messenger was one of the people, approachable and relatable, so that no one could say, "We cannot follow him because he is not like us."

Moreover, Allah's wisdom in sending a human messenger rather than an angel is profound. Had an angel been sent, the people would have been unable to interact with him on a human level, and the test of faith would have been removed. The challenge of believing in a human messenger who faces the same trials as his people is precisely what makes faith meaningful and rewarding. Allah says elsewhere in the Qur'an: "And We did not send before you any of the messengers except that they ate food and walked in the markets" (25:20), confirming that this was the established pattern of all prophets.

Beloved reader, reflect on this: the disbelievers' objection was not based on genuine inquiry but on stubbornness and pride. They sought excuses to reject the truth rather than reasons to accept it. When the heart is sincere, even the most ordinary aspects of the Prophet's life become signs of divine wisdom. The Prophet's humanity was not a contradiction to his prophethood — it was a mercy from Allah, making the message accessible to all of humanity, in every time and place.

Let us learn from this: do not let your own preconceptions or societal expectations blind you to the truth. The guidance of Allah comes in the form that He, in His infinite wisdom, deems most fitting. And the greatest proof of the Prophet's truthfulness was not in supernatural displays, but in the perfection of his character, the beauty of his message, and the transformative power of his call — which continues to illuminate hearts to this very day.

And they say, "Legends of the former peoples which he has written down, and they are dictated to him morning and afternoon."
Say, [O Muhammad], "It has been revealed by He who knows [every] secret within the heavens and the earth. Indeed, He is ever Forgiving and Merciful."
And they say, "What is this messenger that eats food and walks in the markets? Why was there not sent down to him an angel so he would be with him a warner?
Or [why is not] a treasure presented to him [from heaven], or does he [not] have a garden from which he eats?" And the wrongdoers say, "You follow not but a man affected by magic."
9ٱنظُرۡ كَيۡفَ ضَرَبُواْ لَكَ ٱلۡأَمۡثَٰلَ فَضَلُّواْ فَلَا يَسۡتَطِيعُونَ سَبِيلًا
Look how they strike for you comparisons; but they have strayed, so they cannot [find] a way.
