Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "ضَرَبُوا لَكَ الْأَمْثَالَ" — They struck for you comparisons and likened you to false descriptions, such as calling you a sorcerer, a madman, or one possessed.
- "فَضَلُّوا" — So they went astray from the truth and lost the right path.
- "فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ سَبِيلًا" — Thus they cannot find any way or means to reach the truth or to prove their false claims.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Messenger, look with your own eyes and reflect upon the astonishing state of these disbelievers! They invented for you the strangest of descriptions — calling you a sorcerer, a madman, a poet, or one bewitched — all in a desperate attempt to reject your message and undermine your honor. Yet these very descriptions contradict one another, for how can one person be both a sorcerer and a madman, both a poet and one possessed? Their words are chaotic and baseless.
By fabricating such false likenesses about you, they only strayed further from the truth. They wandered away from the path of guidance, and now they are utterly incapable of finding any way back to it — nor can they find any valid argument to support their slander against you. Their false accusations collapse under the weight of their own absurdity, leaving them lost and powerless.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: when people reject the truth, they often resort to false accusations and distorted descriptions of the one who calls them to goodness. Yet such attempts never succeed, for the truth remains clear and radiant, and falsehood is always doomed to fade. Take comfort, dear reader — the Prophet ﷺ faced the harshest of words, and still Allah preserved his honor and elevated his name. If you are upon the truth, do not be shaken by the criticisms of those who stray; their words only reveal their own confusion, while your steadfastness becomes a testimony to your sincerity. And how beautiful is the promise of Allah: that those who strive in His cause will never be left without a way forward, while those who oppose the truth will find every path blocked before them. So hold firm to the guidance of the Qur'an, and let the example of the Prophet ﷺ be your light — for the truth, no matter how fiercely attacked, always prevails in the end.
