Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • طس (Ta-Seen): These are among the disjointed letters (huruf muqatta'ah) that appear at the beginning of some Quranic chapters. Their precise meaning is known only to Allah, yet they serve as a miraculous challenge to mankind, demonstrating that the Quran is composed of the very letters they speak with, yet none can produce its like.
  • تِلْكَ (Tilka): "These" — referring to the verses that follow.
  • آيَاتُ الْقُرْآنِ (Ayatul-Qur'an): The signs and verses of the Quran.
  • كِتَابٍ مُّبِينٍ (Kitabin Mubin): A clear, manifest Book that makes everything plain and distinct.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah begins this noble chapter with the disjointed letters "Ta-Seen," just as He begins other chapters with similar letters. These letters draw the listener's attention to the miracle of the Quran: it is composed of the same Arabic letters that the Arabs themselves used in their daily speech, yet they were utterly incapable of producing anything comparable to it. This serves as a challenge and a proof of its divine origin.

Then Allah says: "These are the verses of the Quran and a clear Book." The verses being referred to are those that follow in this chapter — and indeed, all the verses of the Quran. They are the signs of a Book that is utterly clear and unambiguous. This clarity means that anyone who reflects upon it with an open heart will recognize it as the word of Allah, for it explains everything mankind needs for their religious and worldly affairs: matters of belief, worship, morality, and law. There is no confusion in it, no contradiction, and no obscurity that cannot be resolved.

The Quran is not a book of riddles or vague philosophy; it is a guiding light that distinguishes truth from falsehood, right from wrong. Its verses call to the worship of Allah alone, warn against His punishment, and promise His eternal reward. Whoever ponders its meanings will find it addressing the deepest needs of the human soul — guiding it to peace, justice, and success in this life and the Hereafter.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse invites you to pause and consider: what book on earth can claim such perfect clarity, such profound wisdom, and such transformative power? The Quran has stood for over fourteen centuries, untouched by alteration, challenging every generation to find a single error or contradiction within it — and none ever has. It is a Book that speaks to your heart, your intellect, and your daily life. Open it with sincerity, and you will find it is not merely words on a page — it is a conversation between the Creator and His servant, a mercy for all who seek the truth. Let these verses be your guide to a life of purpose, and your companion on the journey to eternal success.
