Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Khāwiyah (خَاوِيَةً): Empty, desolate, collapsed and fallen into ruin—with walls toppled and roofs caved in.
- Bimā Ẓalamū (بِمَا ظَلَمُوا): Because of their wrongdoing and oppression—their persistent disbelief, rejection of the truth, and transgression against themselves and others.
- Āyah (آيَةً): A sign, lesson, or profound reminder that carries deep meaning for those who reflect.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Look at those houses—once filled with life, wealth, and activity—now standing empty and desolate, their walls collapsed upon their roofs, with not a single soul left inside. This was the fate of the people of Thamud and similar nations who rejected the messengers of Allah. Their destruction was not arbitrary; it was the direct consequence of their own wrongdoing—their stubborn disbelief, their mockery of the prophets, and their persistence in sin. They were given chances, warned repeatedly, yet they chose arrogance over humility and falsehood over truth.
In this scene of ruin lies a profound lesson for those who possess knowledge and understanding. The empty homes speak louder than any words: they testify that no power, wealth, or status can protect a people once Allah's decree arrives. The very stones and beams that once sheltered them now bear witness to their end. This is not merely history—it is a living sign for every generation. Those who truly know—who reflect on the fate of past nations—will recognize the unchanging divine law: that arrogance leads to downfall, and that the earth remains while its tyrants vanish.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and ponder: these ruins were not built by strangers—they were homes of people like us, who ate, drank, worked, and planned for the future. Yet their plans could not save them. The Qur'an presents this scene not to frighten you, but to awaken you. If you see the signs of Allah's power in the remnants of destroyed nations, then let your heart soften and your steps turn toward obedience. The same Allah who destroyed them is the One who gives you life today—and He is the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving, who accepts repentance before the moment of death arrives. Do not wait until your own home becomes empty and your own name becomes a lesson for others. Seize this moment, turn to your Lord, and let the ruins of the past guide you to the safety of faith. For indeed, in every sign of destruction lies an invitation to salvation—and the door of repentance remains open until the sun rises from the west.
