Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
The letters "Alif-Lam-Mim" (الم) are among the *Huroof al-Muqatta'at* (the disjointed or disconnected letters) that appear at the beginning of some chapters of the Qur'an. These letters are not words with a conventional meaning in Arabic; rather, they are a linguistic challenge and a miracle in themselves. Their precise interpretation is known only to Allah, though scholars have offered insights into their significance.
Explanation of the Verse:
The verse begins with the Arabic letters "Alif-Lam-Mim." These are from the group of letters known as the *Huroof al-Muqatta'at*, which appear at the start of several chapters in the Qur'an, such as Surah Al-Baqarah, Surah Al-Imran, and others. The discussion of their meaning and purpose has already been addressed in the context of the opening of Surah Al-Baqarah, and the same applies here.
These letters serve as a profound reminder of the miraculous nature of the Qur'an. They are composed of the very letters—Alif, Lam, Mim—that form the Arabic language, the language of the Arabs to whom the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent. Yet, despite being made of the same letters they used daily in their speech and poetry, the Arabs were utterly unable to produce anything like the Qur'an. This highlights the divine origin of the Book and stands as a challenge to humanity to bring forth a single chapter comparable to it, if they truly doubt its source.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Beloved reader, ponder deeply upon these letters. They are not mere symbols; they are a call to reflect on the greatness of the Qur'an and the One who revealed it. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, chose to begin this chapter with these letters to draw your attention to what follows—a revelation that guides to truth, illuminates hearts, and leads to eternal success. Let this be an invitation for you to open your heart to the Qur'an, to read it with contemplation, and to recognize that it is the uncreated word of Allah, preserved for all of humanity. The very fact that you are reading this is a mercy from your Lord—so do not turn away from His guidance, but embrace it with sincerity and humility. Indeed, in the Qur'an lies the light that dispels every darkness, and the peace that calms every restless soul.
