Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Al-ʿAdhāb al-Adnā (ٱلْعَذَابِ ٱلْأَدْنَىٰ): The nearer or lesser punishment — referring to trials, calamities, and afflictions in this worldly life.
  • Al-ʿAdhāb al-Akbar (ٱلْعَذَابِ ٱلْأَكْبَرِ): The greater punishment — referring to the severe torment of the Hereafter in Hellfire.
  • Yarjiʿūn (يَرْجِعُونَ): They return — meaning they turn back in repentance to their Lord.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) declares with absolute certainty — using the emphatic form "We will surely make them taste" — that He will cause those who persist in disbelief and sin to experience a lesser punishment in this very world, before the greater punishment of the Hereafter arrives. This worldly punishment takes many forms: devastating calamities, severe trials, economic hardships, illnesses, defeats in battle, and even capture or humiliation at the hands of their enemies. These are not random misfortunes; rather, they are divine signals and wake-up calls from the Most Merciful.

The wisdom behind this "nearer punishment" is profoundly compassionate. Allah sends these trials not to destroy people outright, but as a means of awakening their hearts and minds. The purpose is clearly stated at the end of the verse: "so that perhaps they may return" — return to their Lord, return to obedience, return to the straight path, and turn away from their sins in sincere repentance. It is as if the Creator is calling out to His servants: "O My servants, this hardship you face is but a gentle reminder from Me. Turn back to Me before the greater punishment arrives, for I am the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful."

This verse beautifully illustrates the balance between Allah's justice and His mercy. He does not immediately punish the wrongdoers with the ultimate torment; instead, He grants them opportunities to reflect, repent, and reform. The trials of this world are, in essence, a mercy in disguise — a chance to correct one's course while there is still time. For those who heed the warning and return to Allah, the greater punishment is averted, and they are saved from the eternal torment of Hellfire.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse carries a timeless message for all of humanity. If you find yourself facing difficulties, trials, or hardships, pause and reflect: perhaps your Lord is calling you back to Him. These challenges are not merely punishments; they are invitations to reconnect with your Creator, to purify your heart, and to realign your life with divine guidance. The door of repentance is always open, and Allah's mercy encompasses all things. Do not wait until the greater punishment comes — seize this moment, turn to your Lord with a sincere heart, and experience the peace and tranquility that comes from submission to the Almighty. For indeed, Allah loves those who return to Him, and He rejoices in their repentance more than a traveler who finds his lost camel in the desert.

📜 Verse 19-23 — As-Sajdah

As for those who believed and did righteous deeds, for them will be the Gardens of Refuge as accommodation for what they used to do.
But as for those who defiantly disobeyed, their refuge is the Fire. Every time they wish to emerge from it, they will be returned to it while it is said to them, "Taste the punishment of the Fire which you used to deny."
And we will surely let them taste the nearer punishment short of the greater punishment that perhaps they will repent.
And who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the verses of his Lord; then he turns away from them? Indeed We, from the criminals, will take retribution.
And We certainly gave Moses the Scripture, so do not be in doubt over his meeting. And we made the Torah guidance for the Children of Israel.
