📖 English Meaning
But as for those who defiantly disobeyed, their refuge is the Fire. Every time they wish to emerge from it, they will be returned to it while it is said to them, "Taste the punishment of the Fire which you used to deny."

Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Fasaqoo (فَسَقُوا): Those who deviated from obedience to Allah, committed acts of disobedience, and rejected His commands — specifically referring to the disbelievers and persistent sinners.
  • Ma'wahum (مَأْوَاهُمُ): Their final abode, refuge, or resting place.
  • U'eedoo (أُعِيدُوا): They are returned or thrust back.
  • Tukadhdhiboon (تُكَذِّبُونَ): You used to deny or reject (the truth of this punishment).

Explanation of the Verse:

After mentioning the bliss of the believers in the previous verses, Allah now turns to the opposite end of the spectrum — the fate of those who chose corruption and rebellion over faith. He says: "And as for those who deviated from obedience" — meaning those who knowingly turned away from Allah's guidance, rejected His messengers, and persisted in sin — "their abode is the Fire." This is not just a temporary stop; it is their permanent dwelling place, prepared for them as a just consequence of their own choices.

Then Allah describes a horrifying scene that captures the eternal torment: "Every time they wish to come out of it, they are returned to it." Imagine the desperation — the flames engulf them, and instinctively they try to escape, but every attempt is thwarted. They are pushed back into the depths of the Fire, their hope crushed again and again. This cycle is endless, illustrating that the punishment is not merely physical but also psychological — the constant frustration of failed escape attempts adds to their agony.

And then comes the ultimate humiliation: "And it is said to them: 'Taste the punishment of the Fire which you used to deny.'" This is a taunt, a rebuke that cuts deeper than the flames themselves. In the worldly life, when the messengers warned them of this very Fire, they mocked the warning and called it a lie. Now, they are forced to taste with their own senses what they once dismissed with their tongues. The words are spoken to them as a form of disgrace, increasing their rage and sorrow, because they now realize — too late — that everything they denied was absolutely true.

This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul: the choices we make in this brief life determine our eternal destination. The Fire is not a blind fate; it is a consequence of deliberate rejection and persistent sin. But the door of repentance remains open in this world — Allah's mercy is vast, and He accepts those who turn back to Him before the final hour arrives.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, this verse is not meant to frighten you into despair, but to awaken you into action. Allah mentions this punishment so that you may take heed while there is still time. The same tongue that can deny the truth today can utter words of repentance tomorrow. The same heart that hardens against guidance can soften with sincere remembrance. Do not let the Fire be your abode when Paradise is being offered to you at every moment of your life. The choice is yours — and the time to choose is now.

📜 Verse 18-22 — As-Sajdah

Then is one who was a believer like one who was defiantly disobedient? They are not equal.
As for those who believed and did righteous deeds, for them will be the Gardens of Refuge as accommodation for what they used to do.
But as for those who defiantly disobeyed, their refuge is the Fire. Every time they wish to emerge from it, they will be returned to it while it is said to them, "Taste the punishment of the Fire which you used to deny."
And we will surely let them taste the nearer punishment short of the greater punishment that perhaps they will repent.
And who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the verses of his Lord; then he turns away from them? Indeed We, from the criminals, will take retribution.
