Explanation of the Verse:
O wives of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), you are not like any other women in status, honor, and virtue. Allah has elevated you to a rank that no other woman can reach — provided you remain steadfast in piety and obedience to Allah. Your reward is multiplied, and your responsibility is greater precisely because of this noble position.
Therefore, if you truly wish to be among the God-fearing, then do not speak to foreign (non-mahram) men in a soft, delicate, or alluring tone that could stir desire in the heart of someone who carries sickness — whether that sickness is hypocrisy or an unhealthy craving for forbidden pleasures. Such a tone might give him false hope and lead him to sinful thoughts or advances.
Instead, speak with dignity and decency — words that are clear, honorable, and free from any ambiguity or flirtation. Speak only what is necessary, in a straightforward manner, without prolonging conversation or adding softness to your voice. This is not only a command for the wives of the Prophet, but a timeless lesson for every believing woman: guard your speech as you guard your modesty, for the tongue can be a gateway to fitnah just as the eyes can.
This verse beautifully illustrates the elevated station of the Mothers of the Believers, and through them, Allah teaches all Muslim women the importance of maintaining dignity, self-respect, and modesty in every interaction. When a woman speaks with honor and composure, she protects herself, her reputation, and the purity of her heart — and she becomes a source of goodness and blessing for her community.
Let this be a reminder that true beauty lies not in attracting attention, but in commanding respect. And the one who lowers her voice in modesty, Allah raises her rank in this life and the next.
