- لَا تَبَرَّجْنَ (Lā tabarrajna): Do not display your beauty, adornments, or charms in a way that attracts attention, as was done in the days of ignorance.
- الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ الْأُولَىٰ (Al-Jāhiliyyah al-Ūlā): The pre-Islamic era of ignorance, when women displayed themselves openly without modesty or moral restraint.
- الرِّجْسَ (Ar-Rijs): Impurity, sin, evil, and all forms of spiritual and moral filth.
- أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ (Ahla al-Bayt): The People of the Household of the Prophet (peace be upon him), specifically including his wives and his family.
Tafsir (Explanation):
O wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and all believing women, Allah commands you to remain firmly settled in your homes, making them your primary place of peace and dignity. Do not leave your homes except for genuine needs, and when you do go out, do not display your beauty, adornments, or physical charms in the manner of the women of the pre-Islamic era of ignorance, who openly flaunted themselves to attract attention and allure men. Instead, let your presence be marked by modesty, honor, and self-respect.
Alongside this, Allah instructs you to establish the prayer perfectly and consistently at its appointed times, to give the obligatory charity (Zakat) as prescribed, and to obey Allah and His Messenger in all matters—both in what they command and what they forbid. This obedience is the foundation of a righteous life and the key to Allah’s pleasure.
Then Allah reveals the profound wisdom behind these commands: "Allah only intends to remove all impurity from you, O People of the Household, and to purify you with a thorough purification." This means that Allah, out of His immense mercy and love, desires to cleanse you completely from sin, evil, and every form of spiritual deficiency. He wants you to be adorned with noble character, pure hearts, and upright actions, so that you become shining examples of faith and righteousness for all of humanity.
This verse is a great honor for the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his family, as Allah Himself declares their purification and elevation. Yet, it is also a universal lesson for every believing woman and every Muslim: that true honor lies not in outward display, but in inner purity, obedience to Allah, and adherence to the path of modesty and righteousness.
Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear believer, see how Allah, the Most Merciful, addresses His beloved Prophet’s household with such tenderness and care—guiding them to the highest standards of conduct and then promising them purification. This is the beauty of Islam: it does not restrict women, but rather liberates them from the chains of being judged by appearance or exploited by society. Islam elevates a woman’s worth by her faith, her character, and her devotion to Allah. When a woman embraces modesty, she protects her own dignity, strengthens her family, and contributes to a pure and healthy society. And when she prays, gives charity, and obeys Allah, she builds a direct connection with her Creator that no worldly trend can ever break. Let this verse inspire you to cherish your home as a sanctuary of peace, to guard your modesty as a crown of honor, and to seek Allah’s purification with a sincere heart—for He has promised to cleanse those who turn to Him. Indeed, in obeying Allah lies true freedom and everlasting success.
