The Tafsir (Interpretation):
O you who have sincerely believed in Allah and His Messenger and committed to His divine law! When you enter into a valid marriage contract with believing women, and then divorce them before you have consummated the marriage (i.e., before physical intimacy), then no waiting period (Iddah) is required of them that you would count in terms of menstrual cycles or months. The wisdom behind this is profound and merciful: since the marriage was not consummated, there is no concern about pregnancy, and therefore the woman is free to move on with her life immediately without any delay or restriction.
However, this ruling is accompanied by a beautiful command that elevates the dignity of the woman and the morality of the believer. Allah commands you to provide her with a gift (Mut'ah) — a fair and generous financial compensation according to your means. This is not a punishment but a comfort; it is a way to heal the emotional wound of a broken engagement and to honour her dignity. It acknowledges her worth and softens the blow of the divorce. If a dowry (Mahr) was already specified, then she is entitled to half of it, and the gift is in addition to that in some cases, or as a substitute when no dowry was specified.
Then, Allah commands you to release them in a gracious manner — meaning, let them go with kindness, respect, and honour. Do not prolong the matter, do not harm them, do not speak ill of them, and do not withhold their rights. A "beautiful release" means parting ways with a smile, with prayers for each other's well-being, and with complete fairness.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, see how Islam, in its perfect justice, protects the rights and feelings of women even in the most delicate of situations. This verse is a living proof that Islam is not a religion of harshness, but a religion of mercy, compassion, and refined character. It teaches us that even in the moment of separation, there is room for ihsan (excellence) and kindness.
Let this be a reminder for every Muslim: your character is tested not only in how you treat those you love and keep, but also in how you treat those you part with. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The best of you are those who are best to their wives." So, be a source of comfort, never a source of pain. Implement this divine guidance in your life, and you will find peace in your heart and the love of Allah in your deeds. This is the beauty of Islam — a complete way of life that polishes the soul and builds a society based on mutual respect and mercy.
