📖 English Meaning
Those who were oppressed will say to those who were arrogant, "Rather, [it was your] conspiracy of night and day when you were ordering us to disbelieve in Allah and attribute to Him equals." But they will [all] confide regret when they see the punishment; and We will put shackles on the necks of those who disbelieved. Will they be recompensed except for what they used to do?

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Al-Andad" (أندادًا): Equals, rivals, or partners set up alongside Allah in worship.
  • "Makr" (مكر): Deception, cunning schemes, or persistent plotting.
  • "Al-Aghlal" (الأغلال): Iron collars or chains placed around the necks.
  • "An-Nadamah" (الندامة): Deep regret, remorse, and sorrow.

Tafsir (Explanation):

On the Day of Judgment, when the truth becomes fully clear and the reality of their deeds overwhelms them, the weak and oppressed followers will turn to their arrogant leaders who had misled them. The leaders will try to absolve themselves, claiming they were not responsible for the followers' misguidance. But the followers will respond firmly, rejecting this excuse: "No! It was your persistent scheming—day and night, without pause—that led us astray. You never ceased commanding us to reject Allah and to set up rivals alongside Him in our worship."

The followers make it clear that their sin was not born in a vacuum; it was the result of relentless pressure, manipulation, and deception from those who held power and influence over them. The leaders used every moment—night and day—to plant seeds of doubt, spread falsehood, and demand blind obedience to their corrupt ways.

Yet, when the punishment becomes visible and the reality of Hellfire dawns upon them, both groups—the leaders and the followers—hide their regret within themselves. They feel an overwhelming remorse, but it is too late. Their sorrow is concealed because it brings no benefit; no apology can undo what has been done.

Then Allah describes the scene further: iron collars are placed around the necks of those who disbelieved—both the arrogant and the weak who followed them—as a sign of their humiliation and subjugation. They are bound and restrained, unable to escape the consequences of their choices.

The verse concludes with a powerful rhetorical question: "Are they recompensed except for what they used to do?" This is a statement of perfect justice. They are not being punished unjustly or for anything beyond their own deeds. Their punishment is a direct and fitting result of their disbelief, their sins, and their persistence in evil during their worldly life.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This verse carries a profound lesson for every soul. It warns us of the grave danger of following those who call us away from Allah—whether they are leaders, peers, or even our own desires. The followers' excuse of "we were weak" will not save them, because they had the ability to resist and the intellect to discern truth from falsehood. Likewise, the leaders' attempts to shift blame will fail, for they will bear the weight of their own sins and the sins of those they misled.

Dear reader, let this be a wake-up call. Do not let anyone—no matter how influential, wealthy, or persuasive—turn you away from the worship of Allah alone. Stand firm upon the truth, even if you stand alone. The temporary comfort of following the crowd is nothing compared to the eternal bliss of Paradise, just as the temporary pleasures of this world are nothing compared to the eternal torment of Hellfire.

And know that Allah's justice is perfect. He does not wrong anyone, not even by the weight of an atom. Every deed, good or bad, will be accounted for. So choose today what you will wish you had chosen when you stand before your Lord. Embrace faith, sincerity, and righteousness—for that is the path to true success, both in this life and the next. May Allah guide us all to the straight path and protect us from the schemes of the misleaders. Ameen.

📜 Verse 31-35 — Saba

And those who disbelieve say, "We will never believe in this Qur'an nor in that before it." But if you could see when the wrongdoers are made to stand before their Lord, refuting each other's words... Those who were oppressed will say to those who were arrogant, "If not for you, we would have been believers."
Those who were arrogant will say to those who were oppressed, "Did we avert you from guidance after it had come to you? Rather, you were criminals."
And We did not send into a city any warner except that its affluent said, "Indeed we, in that with which you were sent, are disbelievers."
And they said, "We are more [than the believers] in wealth and children, and we are not to be punished."
