Surah Saba — Verse 34

In this verse, Allah (Glorified be He) addresses His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and all believers with a profound and comforting truth: Throughout history, whenever Allah sent a warner to a community—a prophet or messenger calling them to the worship of Allah alone and to righteousness—the response of the wealthy and privileged class was almost always the same. These "mutrafoon"—those who have been given abundance of wealth, luxury, and social standing—would arrogantly declare, "We disbelieve in what you have been sent with." They rejected the message not because it was unclear or lacking in truth, but because their hearts were hardened by their attachment to worldly pleasures and their fear of losing their status and privileges.

This pattern was universal and repeated across nations. The affluent elite of every town, who enjoyed the comforts of life and held sway over the common people, were the first to oppose the messengers. They saw the call to monotheism, accountability, and moral reform as a threat to their authority and their way of life. Their pride and arrogance blinded them from seeing the truth, and they responded with outright denial.

This verse serves as a source of consolation and reassurance to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and to every believer who faces rejection or opposition. It teaches us that the resistance of the wealthy and powerful is not a sign that the message is false; rather, it is a confirmation of its truth, for the messengers of Allah have always faced such opposition. The Quran reminds us that this is the sunnah (established way) of Allah in dealing with nations—so do not be grieved by the rejection of your people, for you are following in the footsteps of the greatest prophets.
