Explanation of the Verse:
When the time comes to divide the inheritance, and there happen to be present at that gathering relatives of the deceased who do not inherit by law, or orphans who have lost their fathers, or poor people who are in need — do not let their presence make you feel uneasy or turn them away empty-handed. Instead, give them something from the estate before the division takes place, as a voluntary act of kindness and generosity. This is not an obligation, but a beautiful gesture of compassion that softens hearts and spreads love.
And if you are unable to give them anything due to the smallness of the estate or the number of heirs, then at least speak to them with kind and honorable words — words that show respect, gentleness, and care. Do not let them leave with a broken heart or a sense of humiliation. A warm word, a sincere apology, or a gentle excuse can be as comforting as a gift.
This verse teaches us a profound lesson: Islam is not merely a religion of laws and obligations; it is a religion of mercy, generosity, and noble character. Even in a moment when wealth is being distributed, the heart of a believer should remain attentive to those around them — especially the vulnerable — and should seek to bring joy to their hearts in whatever way possible.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, see how beautifully Islam trains the soul! It turns even a worldly matter like inheritance into an opportunity for charity, kindness, and human connection. Imagine the scene: a family gathers to divide what the deceased left behind, and in that very moment, they are reminded to look beyond their own share and care for those who have nothing. This is the spirit of Islam — a spirit that elevates a person from selfishness to selflessness, from cold calculation to warm compassion.
If you are a Muslim, let this verse inspire you to be generous in every situation, even when you are not obliged to give. And if you are not yet a Muslim, know that this is the guidance of the Quran — a book that has been transforming hearts for over fourteen centuries, teaching humanity how to live with dignity, mercy, and love for one another. The door of Islam is open to you, and its teachings are a mercy for all of creation.
