Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Istaqāmū" (اسْتَقَامُوا): They remained steadfast and upright upon their faith, adhering firmly to the commands of Allah and avoiding His prohibitions without deviation or wavering.
- "Tatanazzalu" (تَتَنَزَّلُ): The angels descend upon them, specifically at the time of death and in the grave, bringing them glad tidings.
- "Lā takhāfū" (أَلَّا تَخَافُوا): Do not fear — a reassurance against any future hardship, including the terrors of death, the grave, and the Day of Judgment.
- "Wa lā taḥzanū" (وَلَا تَحْزَنُوا): Do not grieve — a comfort for what they leave behind in this world, whether family, wealth, or worldly matters.
The Interpretation:
Allah, the Most High, declares that those who sincerely proclaimed, "Our Lord is Allah alone, with no partner or associate," and then remained steadfast upon that declaration — living their lives in obedience to His commands, avoiding His prohibitions, and keeping their faith pure from any form of shirk (polytheism) or hypocrisy — are the recipients of a magnificent honor. When death approaches them, the angels descend upon them with a serene and joyful presence, delivering a threefold message of comfort and hope.
First, the angels say: "Do not fear" — for you have nothing to dread from the trials of death, the questioning in the grave, or the horrors of the Hereafter. Your Lord has accepted your deeds and will shield you from every terror.
Second: "Do not grieve" — for you need not sorrow over the worldly things you are leaving behind, whether family, wealth, or positions. Allah will compensate you with what is far better and everlasting.
Third: "Rejoice in the Paradise which you were promised" — for the eternal bliss that you were promised in this life through the tongues of the Messengers is now drawing near. This is the ultimate reward for your faith and your steadfastness.
This verse is a profound source of hope and motivation for every believer. It teaches us that true success lies not merely in uttering words of faith, but in remaining constant upon them through every trial and temptation. The angels' descent is not limited to the moment of death alone; it is also a spiritual reality for those who live upright lives — they are granted tranquility, divine support, and inner peace in this world, and the most beautiful farewell at the end of their journey.
Dear reader, let this verse ignite in your heart a burning desire to strengthen your relationship with Allah. Strive to be among those who say with certainty, "Our Lord is Allah," and then prove it through your actions, your character, and your unwavering commitment to His path. For when the moment of departure arrives, you will be greeted not with fear, but with the most beautiful of tidings — the eternal gardens of Paradise, where no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart can imagine the delights that await you.
