Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Kaba'ir al-ithm (كبائر الإثم): The major sins — those grave offenses explicitly prohibited by Allah, for which severe punishment is promised in this life or the Hereafter.
- Al-Fawahish (الفواحش): Immoral acts and lewd sins that are particularly repugnant and shameful, such as adultery, slander of chaste women, and other acts that incur prescribed legal punishments (hudud).
- Yaghfirun (يغفرون): They forgive, pardon, and overlook the offense committed against them, choosing not to retaliate or seek revenge.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues to describe the beautiful qualities of the believers who are destined for Paradise. Allah praises those who diligently avoid the major sins — such as shirk (associating partners with Allah), murder, consuming usury (riba), devouring the wealth of orphans, slandering chaste women, fleeing from the battlefield, and being undutiful to parents — as well as all lewd and shameful acts that corrupt the soul and society.
Then comes a truly remarkable trait: "And when they are angered, they forgive." These are people who, despite being wronged and feeling the natural surge of anger, choose the higher path. They do not let rage control them; rather, they suppress their anger, pardon the one who harmed them, and let go of the desire for revenge — all in pursuit of Allah's reward and His abundant forgiveness. This is not a sign of weakness, but of immense inner strength and noble character, for the Prophet ﷺ said: "The strong one is not the one who overcomes people by his strength, but the one who controls himself when in anger."
This forgiveness, however, is a virtue when it brings benefit and reconciliation; it is a gracious act from those who have been wronged, reflecting their hope for Allah's mercy and their desire to emulate His attribute of forgiveness.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, look at the magnificence of this divine description! Allah is not merely asking us to avoid sin — He is elevating us to the rank of those who forgive when they have the power to take revenge. This is the character of the beloved of Allah, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who never took revenge for personal wrongs, yet upheld justice when Allah's limits were transgressed.
Imagine the peace that fills a heart that releases anger and embraces forgiveness. Imagine the harmony that would spread through families and communities if we practiced this noble trait. This is the path to true greatness — not in retaliation, but in restraint; not in vengeance, but in pardon. And the reward? Allah says: "So whoever pardons and makes reconciliation — his reward is with Allah" (Ash-Shura 42:40).
Let this verse inspire you to be among those whom Allah praises — those who avoid major sins, shun immorality, and when angered, forgive. For in doing so, you not only purify your own soul but also draw closer to the Most Merciful, who loves those who pardon others.
