Word Meanings:

  • انتصر (intasara): To seek victory or to defend oneself; to retaliate against injustice by taking back one's right.
  • بعد ظلمه (ba'da zulmihi): After the injustice committed against him; i.e., after the oppressor has wronged him.
  • ما عليهم من سبيل (ma 'alayhim min sabil): No path of blame or punishment; no grounds for reproach or legal liability.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This noble verse establishes a fundamental principle of justice in Islam: the right to defend oneself against oppression. Allah (Glorious is He) declares that whoever is wronged and then rises to reclaim his right—whether through lawful means, seeking justice from authorities, or defending himself proportionally—bears no sin and incurs no blame. Such a person is not to be reproached, criticized, or held accountable, for he has merely taken back what was rightfully his after being transgressed against.

The verse comes as a divine reassurance to the oppressed, affirming that standing up against injustice is not only permissible but commendable. It removes any feeling of guilt from the one who defends his honor, wealth, or rights after being wronged. This is a mercy from Allah, for He does not leave the victim helpless, nor does He require him to remain silent in the face of aggression. Rather, He grants him the right to respond in kind, within the bounds of justice and fairness.

At the same time, this verse is a warning to oppressors: they will have no excuse on the Day of Judgment, for the one they wronged was given the right to seek redress. The "path" mentioned here refers to any way of blaming or punishing the one who retaliates justly. When a person takes back his right after being wronged, no one can say, "Why did you do that?"—for the fault lies with the original aggressor, not with the one who defends himself.

This teaching reflects the beauty of Islam's balance: it does not encourage passivity or humiliation, nor does it allow unchecked vengeance. It sets a clear boundary—retaliation is permitted only after oppression, and it must be proportionate. Beyond this, the verse paves the way for the next one, which praises those who forgive and reconcile, showing that while justice is a right, forgiveness is a higher virtue.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, know that your Lord is Just and never abandons His servants. If you have been wronged, you have every right to seek justice—this is your God-given right, and no one can blame you for it. Islam does not ask you to be a doormat; it empowers you to stand firm against injustice. Yet, remember that the ultimate victory lies with those who combine strength with mercy. If you can forgive after securing your right, your reward is with Allah, who loves the doers of good. Let this verse fill your heart with courage and hope: your Lord sees your struggle, and He has opened the door of justice for you. Never despair, for the scales of Allah never tilt against the truth.

📜 Verse 39-43 — Ash-Shura

And those who, when tyranny strikes them, they defend themselves,
And the retribution for an evil act is an evil one like it, but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation - his reward is [due] from Allah. Indeed, He does not like wrongdoers.
And whoever avenges himself after having been wronged - those have not upon them any cause [for blame].
The cause is only against the ones who wrong the people and tyrannize upon the earth without right. Those will have a painful punishment.
And whoever is patient and forgives - indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] determination.
