Word Meanings:

  • As-Sabeel (السَّبِيل): The path of blame, accountability, or legal recourse.
  • Yazlimoon (يَظْلِمُونَ): Those who wrong, oppress, or transgress against others.
  • Yabghoon (يَبْغُونَ): Those who act with arrogance, tyranny, and corruption, exceeding all bounds.
  • Bi-ghayri al-Haqq (بِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ): Without any just cause or divine permission.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse clarifies a crucial principle of justice in Islam: blame and accountability are only directed toward those who wrong other people and spread corruption on earth without any right to do so. Such individuals oppress others, violate their rights, and act with arrogance and tyranny, exceeding the limits that Allah has set for them. They cause harm, injustice, and disorder in society, whether through physical aggression, verbal abuse, financial exploitation, or any other form of transgression.

The verse makes it clear that Allah, in His perfect justice, does not hold people accountable for what they cannot control, nor does He punish those who seek justice or defend themselves against oppression. Rather, the severe accountability and painful punishment are reserved specifically for the oppressors and tyrants who deliberately wrong others and spread corruption. For such people, there awaits a painful punishment in the Hereafter—a punishment that matches the pain and suffering they inflicted upon others in this world.

This verse also carries a profound lesson: the door of justice is open for the oppressed, and the path of blame is closed against them. Allah knows every act of injustice, and nothing escapes His knowledge. The oppressor may escape human justice in this world, but they can never escape the justice of Allah in the Hereafter.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a source of immense comfort and hope for every person who has been wronged or oppressed. It reassures you that your Lord sees your pain, knows your suffering, and has promised justice. No act of oppression is ever overlooked by Allah. At the same time, it serves as a powerful warning to those who are tempted to harm others or spread corruption: your deeds are being recorded, and the punishment for your injustice is certain and painful. Islam stands firmly on the side of justice and fairness, commanding believers to uphold the rights of others and to never become oppressors themselves. Let this verse inspire you to be a person of justice and compassion, and to trust in Allah's perfect justice when you face hardship. Indeed, the promise of Allah is true, and His justice is absolute.

📜 Verse 40-44 — Ash-Shura

And the retribution for an evil act is an evil one like it, but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation - his reward is [due] from Allah. Indeed, He does not like wrongdoers.
And whoever avenges himself after having been wronged - those have not upon them any cause [for blame].
The cause is only against the ones who wrong the people and tyrannize upon the earth without right. Those will have a painful punishment.
And whoever is patient and forgives - indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] determination.
And he whom Allah sends astray - for him there is no protector beyond Him. And you will see the wrongdoers, when they see the punishment, saying, "Is there for return [to the former world] any way?"
