Meanings of the Words:

  • Ḥā Mīm (حم): These are two letters from the Arabic alphabet, known as *al-ḥurūf al-muqaṭṭaʿah* (the disjointed letters). They are among the miraculous aspects of the Qur’an, appearing at the beginning of several chapters. Their precise meaning is known only to Allah, but they serve as a profound reminder of the Qur’an’s divine origin and its inimitability.

Explanation of the Verse:

The verse opens with the letters *Ḥā Mīm*, which are part of the mysterious, disjointed letters that appear at the start of certain Qur’anic chapters. These letters have been discussed previously at the beginning of Surah Al-Baqarah, where their significance was explained. They are a challenge to humanity: the Qur’an is composed of the very letters you speak and write, yet no one can produce anything like it. This highlights the miraculous nature of the Qur’an, proving that it is not the word of any human, but a revelation from Allah, the All-Wise. The letters also draw the listener’s attention, signaling that what follows is of utmost importance and deserving of full focus and contemplation.

A Daʿwah Reflection:

These sacred letters invite us to pause and reflect on the greatness of the Qur’an. They remind us that the Book we hold in our hands is not ordinary speech—it is the direct word of our Creator, preserved for over fourteen centuries. When you recite or hear *Ḥā Mīm*, let it awaken your heart to the majesty of Allah’s message. The Qur’an is a living miracle, speaking to every generation, guiding us from darkness to light. Embrace it with sincerity, for it is the ultimate source of peace, wisdom, and salvation in this life and the Hereafter. Let these letters be a call to deepen your connection with Allah and to treasure every verse as a priceless gift from Him.
