Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Lita'fikana" (لِتَأْفِكَنَا): To turn us away, to divert us, or to make us abandon something by falsehood and deception.
- "Alihitina" (آلِهَتِنَا): Our gods, the idols and deities they worshipped besides Allah.
- "Fa'tina bima ta'iduna" (فَأْتِنَا بِمَا تَعِدُنَا): Then bring upon us what you threaten us with — i.e., the punishment and torment you warn us about.
Explanation of the Verse:
When the Prophet Hud (peace be upon him) called his people, the 'Ad, to worship Allah alone and abandon their idols, they responded with arrogance and mockery. They said to him: "Have you come to us to turn us away from the worship of our gods? If you are truly truthful in your claim that Allah will punish us for our disbelief, then bring upon us that punishment you threaten us with!"
This was a challenge born of stubbornness and denial, not a sincere request for proof. They were so entrenched in their polytheism and so confident in their power and wealth that they dared the Prophet to produce the punishment immediately. Their words reflected both rejection of the message and contempt for the messenger. They did not ask for a sign or a miracle to verify his truthfulness; rather, they demanded the very torment itself — a demand that revealed their utter disregard for the consequences and their deep-seated arrogance.
A Da'wah Perspective:
This verse teaches us a profound lesson about the nature of those who reject the truth. When people are deeply attached to their false beliefs and worldly status, they may respond to the call of monotheism with hostility and even dare to challenge the divine promise. However, the believer should remain patient and steadfast, knowing that the promise of Allah is true, and His punishment or His victory will come at the appointed time. The Quran repeatedly shows us that the arrogant challengers of the prophets were ultimately destroyed, while the believers were saved. This should encourage us to hold firm to our faith, to speak the truth with wisdom, and to trust in Allah's timing — for He never fails His promise. And it should also serve as a warning: do not be like those who demand signs out of mockery, but rather open your heart to the truth before it is too late.
