Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Akhā ʿĀd (أخا عاد): "Brother of ʿĀd" – meaning Hūd (peace be upon him), who was a brother to the tribe of ʿĀd by blood lineage, not by religion.
  • Al-Aḥqāf (الأحقاف): The great sand dunes or curved sandy hills in the southern Arabian Peninsula, where the people of ʿĀd resided.
  • Khalat al-nudhur (خلت النذر): The messengers had passed away or gone before – meaning they had already been sent and completed their missions.
  • Min bayni yadayhi wa min khalfihi (من بين يديه ومن خلفه): Literally "from before him and from behind him" – meaning before Hūd's time and after his time, messengers were sent to their peoples with the same message.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O Prophet, recall and mention to your people the story of Hūd, the noble brother of the mighty tribe of ʿĀd – a brother in lineage, not in faith, for he called them to the worship of Allah alone while they were steeped in idolatry. He warned his people while they dwelt in their vast sandy plains known as Al-Aḥqāf, located in the southern region of the Arabian Peninsula.

The scene is striking: Hūd stood before his people, delivering a message that was not new or strange, for messengers had come before him and would come after him, all carrying the same fundamental call. The succession of prophets – from Nūḥ to Hūd and those who followed – all proclaimed one single truth: "Worship none but Allah." This was the universal message that united every prophet sent by Allah to every nation throughout history.

Hūd's warning was not merely a casual advice; it was a profound and sincere admonition filled with compassion and fear for his people's fate. He said to them: *"Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a Mighty Day"* – referring to the Day of Resurrection, a day whose horrors are beyond human imagination, when every soul shall be held accountable for its deeds.

The beauty of this verse lies in its timeless relevance. Just as Hūd called his people to pure monotheism, every Muslim today carries the same message. The lesson is clear: Allah's mercy is vast, but His justice is certain. The messengers came one after another, not because Allah needed to repeat His message, but because of His immense mercy – giving humanity chance after chance to return to the truth.

This verse also highlights the honor of prophethood and the noble character of Hūd, who despite being from the same tribe and family as those he warned, did not compromise the truth for the sake of kinship. He prioritized Allah's command over tribal loyalty, demonstrating that true faith transcends all worldly bonds.

Daʿwah Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder deeply upon this verse. The people of ʿĀd were mighty in strength and stature, yet their power could not protect them from Allah's punishment when they rejected His messenger. Today, we see nations with immense technological advancement and military might, yet they remain in darkness without the light of faith.

The call of Hūd echoes through the ages: "Worship none but Allah." This is the essence of Islam – to purify your heart, your actions, and your worship exclusively for Allah. When you embrace this truth, you align yourself with the legacy of every prophet from Adam to Muhammad (peace be upon them all). You become part of that blessed chain of believers who chose Allah over everything else.

Let this verse inspire you to examine your own life. Are you truly worshipping Allah alone, or have you allowed other "gods" – whether wealth, status, desires, or worldly attachments – to share in your devotion? The message of Hūd is as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago. Respond to it with an open heart, and you will find peace in this life and salvation in the Hereafter. The door of repentance is always open, and Allah's mercy is greater than any sin you may have committed.

📜 Verse 19-23 — Al-Ahqaf

And for all there are degrees [of reward and punishment] for what they have done, and [it is] so that He may fully compensate them for their deeds, and they will not be wronged.
And the Day those who disbelieved are exposed to the Fire [it will be said], "You exhausted your pleasures during your worldly life and enjoyed them, so this Day you will be awarded the punishment of [extreme] humiliation because you were arrogant upon the earth without right and because you were defiantly disobedient."
And mention, [O Muhammad], the brother of 'Aad, when he warned his people in the [region of] al-Ahqaf - and warners had already passed on before him and after him - [saying], "Do not worship except Allah. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a terrible day."
They said, "Have you come to delude us away from our gods? Then bring us what you promise us, if you should be of the truthful."
He said, "Knowledge [of its time] is only with Allah, and I convey to you that with which I was sent; but I see you [to be] a people behaving ignorantly."
