Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

(Al-‘Ilm): Here it refers specifically to the knowledge of when the promised punishment will occur.
(Uballighukum): I convey and deliver to you.
(Tajhaloon): You act ignorantly, lacking sound judgment and wisdom.

Tafsir (Explanation):

Prophet Hud (peace be upon him) responded to his people’s arrogant challenge—when they demanded that he bring the punishment of Allah immediately if he was truly a messenger—with remarkable wisdom, patience, and clarity. He said: “The knowledge of when that punishment will come is with Allah alone.” He made it absolutely clear that he had no control over the timing of divine retribution; that matter rests exclusively with Allah, Who knows the perfect time for everything according to His infinite wisdom.

He then clarified his role: “I am only a messenger. My duty is to convey to you what I have been sent with—the revelation, the commands, and the warnings from Allah.” He was not sent to be a judge or an executioner, but a warner and a guide. His mission was to deliver the truth clearly, and the outcome of that delivery is in Allah’s hands.

Finally, with a tone of sincere concern, he said: “But I see you are a people who act in ignorance.” This was not an insult but a compassionate observation. Their ignorance was evident in their reckless haste to bring the punishment upon themselves, their mockery of the truth, and their failure to recognize what was truly beneficial for them. They were rushing toward their own destruction while turning away from the very guidance that would save them.

A Da’wah Reflection:

This verse teaches us profound lessons in patience and clarity of purpose. When we call others to the truth, we must remember that our role is only to convey the message with wisdom and sincerity—not to control outcomes or force results. The Prophet Hud’s example shows us how to respond to mockery and hostility with calmness, dignity, and unwavering focus on our mission. He did not argue about the timing of punishment; he redirected the conversation to what mattered: the message itself.

Dear reader, reflect on your own life. How often do we become distracted by debates and arguments that lead nowhere, instead of focusing on conveying the truth with love and clarity? The Prophet Hud’s response is a timeless model: know your role, trust Allah with the results, and never let the ignorance of others provoke you into losing your composure. Islam calls us to be patient, wise, and compassionate even when faced with hostility—because the goal is not to win arguments, but to guide hearts toward the light of Allah.

📜 Verse 21-25 — Al-Ahqaf

And mention, [O Muhammad], the brother of 'Aad, when he warned his people in the [region of] al-Ahqaf - and warners had already passed on before him and after him - [saying], "Do not worship except Allah. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a terrible day."
They said, "Have you come to delude us away from our gods? Then bring us what you promise us, if you should be of the truthful."
He said, "Knowledge [of its time] is only with Allah, and I convey to you that with which I was sent; but I see you [to be] a people behaving ignorantly."
And when they saw it as a cloud approaching their valleys, they said, "This is a cloud bringing us rain!" Rather, it is that for which you were impatient: a wind, within it a painful punishment,
Destroying everything by command of its Lord. And they became so that nothing was seen [of them] except their dwellings. Thus do We recompense the criminal people.
