Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Bisimahum" (بِسِيمَاهُمْ): By their marks or distinguishing signs — outward features or traits that reveal their true identity.
- "Fi lahni al-qawl" (فِي لَحْنِ الْقَوْلِ): In the tone and implication of speech — the indirect hints, ambiguous wording, or the underlying intent that slips through in what a person says.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) directly, reassuring him that Allah is fully aware of the hypocrites who mingled with the Muslim community in Madinah, pretending to be believers while concealing disbelief in their hearts.
Allah says: "And if We willed, We could show them to you, and you would certainly recognize them by their marks." This means that had Allah wished to expose them openly, He could have pointed them out to the Prophet one by one, and he would have known them by clear physical or behavioural signs. However, Allah, in His infinite wisdom, chose not to do so — partly to test the sincerity of the believers, and partly to give the hypocrites a chance to repent, and to teach the community that judgments are based on apparent actions, not hidden intentions.
Then Allah adds: "And you will surely know them by the tone of their speech." This is a profound insight — even if their faces and identities were not revealed, their words would betray them. The way a person phrases things, the subtle twists of language, the ambiguous remarks, the sarcastic undertones, the way they twist praise into blame or sincerity into mockery — all of this reveals what lies within. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was given such discernment that when a hypocrite spoke in his presence, he could sense their true nature from the very texture of their words.
Finally, Allah closes with a universal reminder: "And Allah knows your deeds." This is directed at all people — believers and hypocrites alike. Nothing is hidden from Him: not the sincere deeds of the faithful, nor the concealed schemes of the insincere. Every action, every word, every hidden motive is recorded, and each person will be recompensed accordingly.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse carries a powerful lesson for every Muslim. It teaches us that hypocrisy is not always visible on the surface — but it leaves traces, in speech and in conduct. The believer who is attuned to Allah's guidance can develop discernment, and more importantly, Allah Himself sees everything. So let us purify our intentions, guard our tongues, and ensure that our words and deeds are consistent with what is in our hearts. For the One who knows all secrets will not let a single good deed go unrewarded, nor a single evil deed go unpunished. Let this verse inspire us to be people of sincerity and truth — for Allah loves the truthful, and His knowledge encompasses all that we do.
