Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • "Walanabluwannakum" — We will certainly test you, try you, and put you through trials.
  • "Hatta na'lamal-mujahideena minkum" — Until We know (i.e., make manifest and evident) those who strive and struggle in the cause of Allah.
  • "Was-sabireen" — And those who are patient and steadfast (in the face of hardship, especially in battle).
  • "Wa nabluwa akhbarakum" — And We will test your news/reports, meaning your statements and deeds will be exposed and distinguished.

The Interpretation:

O believers, Allah, the Most High, addresses you with a profound and reassuring truth: He will most certainly test you. This testing is not because He is unaware of your inner states—for His knowledge encompasses all things, past, present, and future, before they even occur. Rather, the purpose of this trial is to bring what is hidden into the open, to manifest the reality of your faith in the arena of action.

The test He speaks of here is specifically the trial of jihad—striving and fighting in His cause against the enemies of the faith. Through this trial, the true identity of the *mujahideen*—those who struggle sincerely with their wealth, their lives, and their efforts—becomes clearly visible. Likewise, the *sabireen*, those who remain patient and unwavering in the face of fear, hardship, and the horrors of battle, are distinguished from those who waver or retreat.

Allah also says that He will test your *akhbar*—your news, your reports, your claims. This means that your words will be weighed against your actions. The one who claims faith but fails to act upon it will be exposed, while the one whose words and deeds are in harmony will be honored. This testing of your affairs reveals the truthful from the false, the sincere from the hypocrite.

The wisdom behind this is immense. Trials purify the believers, elevate their ranks, and strengthen their resolve. They separate the gold from the dross. And through this process, Allah honors those who rise to the challenge, granting them victory in this world and eternal bliss in the Hereafter.

A Call to the Believers:

Dear Muslim, do not fear the tests of life, for they are the very means by which Allah raises your status and draws you closer to Him. When you face trials—whether in striving for His cause, in patience through hardship, or in the consistency between your words and deeds—know that Allah is watching you with mercy and wisdom. He has promised that He will not let the efforts of the believers go to waste.

Embrace the call to jihad in all its forms: the struggle against your own lower desires, the struggle to establish good and forbid evil, and the struggle to defend the truth. Be patient, for patience is the key to victory. Let your actions speak louder than your words, and let your sincerity be known to your Lord.

The path of faith is not a path of ease, but it is a path of honor. And the One who tests you is the One who will reward you—with success in this life and with the ultimate reward of His Paradise. So strive, be patient, and let your deeds testify to the truth of your faith. Indeed, Allah is with those who strive and those who are patient.

📜 Verse 29-33 — Muhammad

Or do those in whose hearts is disease think that Allah would never expose their [feelings of] hatred?
And if We willed, We could show them to you, and you would know them by their mark; but you will surely know them by the tone of [their] speech. And Allah knows your deeds.
And We will surely test you until We make evident those who strive among you [for the cause of Allah] and the patient, and We will test your affairs.
Indeed, those who disbelieved and averted [people] from the path of Allah and opposed the Messenger after guidance had become clear to them - never will they harm Allah at all, and He will render worthless their deeds.
O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and do not invalidate your deeds.
