Word Meanings:

  • Al-Hujurat (الْحُجُرَاتِ): The private chambers or rooms of the Prophet's wives (may Allah be pleased with them), located around the Prophet's mosque in Madinah.
  • Yunadunaka (يُنَادُونَكَ): They call out to you (O Prophet) loudly and abruptly.
  • Min wara'i (مِن وَرَاءِ): From behind, i.e., from outside the doors or walls of those chambers.
  • La ya'qilun (لَا يَعْقِلُونَ): They do not use their intellect/reasoning.

Explanation of the Verse:

This noble verse addresses a specific incident that occurred during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Some Bedouin Arabs, who had come to Madinah, stood outside the private rooms of the Prophet's wives and called out to him in a loud, harsh manner—without patience or proper etiquette. They did not wait for him to come out; instead, they shouted from behind the walls and doors, disturbing the peace of the Prophet's household.

Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) rebukes this behavior gently but firmly, stating that most of them do not understand—meaning, their lack of proper conduct stems from a deficiency in their reasoning and awareness. Had they truly reflected with their minds, they would have realized that the Prophet (peace be upon him) holds a station of immense honor and dignity, and that Allah Himself commands believers to treat him with the utmost respect, reverence, and patience—as stated in the preceding verses: *"O you who believe, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet, nor speak aloud to him as you speak aloud to one another, lest your deeds become worthless while you perceive not"* (49:2).

The verse teaches us a profound lesson about adab (Islamic etiquette)—specifically, the etiquette of dealing with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and, by extension, with all people of knowledge, virtue, and authority. True intellect ('aql) is not merely the ability to think, but the ability to act with wisdom, humility, and respect. Those who possess real understanding recognize the value of proper conduct and the sanctity of others' privacy and dignity.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a beautiful reminder that Islam is a religion of refinement and noble character. The Quran does not merely correct the outward action of calling out loudly; it addresses the root cause—the lack of deep thought and consciousness. Allah, in His infinite mercy, teaches us through this gentle correction that our faith is incomplete without respect for the Prophet (peace be upon him) and, by extension, respect for all believers.

Imagine the love and honor Allah has for His Prophet that He dedicates verses of the Quran to correct even the tone of voice used in his presence! This should fill our hearts with awe and love for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and inspire us to emulate his noble character in our own lives. When we learn to be patient, courteous, and considerate—whether in our homes, our workplaces, or our communities—we are not merely following social norms; we are embodying the very spirit of the Quran.

Let this verse be a call to every Muslim: Let your intellect guide you to good manners. For the one who truly uses their reason will never be rude, hasty, or disrespectful—especially toward those whom Allah has honored. And in doing so, you will earn the love of Allah and His Messenger, and the respect of all people around you.

📜 Verse 2-6 — Al-Hujurat

O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet or be loud to him in speech like the loudness of some of you to others, lest your deeds become worthless while you perceive not.
Indeed, those who lower their voices before the Messenger of Allah - they are the ones whose hearts Allah has tested for righteousness. For them is forgiveness and great reward.
Indeed, those who call you, [O Muhammad], from behind the chambers - most of them do not use reason.
And if they had been patient until you [could] come out to them, it would have been better for them. But Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
