Tafsir (Explanation):
Because of the grave crime of Cain killing his brother Abel — the first bloodshed on earth — Allah decreed upon the Children of Israel, and by extension upon all of humanity, a profound and timeless principle: whoever kills a soul without justification — whether that justification be legal retribution (qisas) for murder, or punishment for spreading corruption in the land such as armed robbery, treason, or crimes that destabilize society — it is as if he has killed all of humanity. This is not an exaggeration but a reflection of the immense weight of a single human life in the sight of Allah. The one who murders has violated the sanctity of life itself, showing utter disregard for the Creator's command, and thus incurs a punishment comparable to destroying an entire community.
Conversely, whoever saves a soul — by refraining from unlawful killing, by rescuing someone from death, or by protecting life — it is as if he has saved all of humanity. This is because preserving one life honors the principle of human dignity and upholds the sanctity that Allah has bestowed upon every person. The reward for such an act is immense, as if one had given life to the entire human race.
This decree was emphasized to the Children of Israel, and it remains a universal moral law. Indeed, Allah's messengers came to them with clear proofs, miracles, and undeniable signs to guide them toward righteousness and away from bloodshed. Yet, despite all these evidences, many of them continued to transgress beyond all bounds, committing injustices and spreading corruption upon the earth.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, ponder the magnificence of this divine principle: in Islam, the life of one innocent person is worth the life of all humanity. This teaching elevates the value of every human being, regardless of race, color, or creed. It instills in the believer a profound reverence for life and a deep sense of responsibility toward others. How beautiful is this religion that teaches us to be guardians of peace and protectors of the vulnerable!
If you are seeking the truth, know that Islam came to establish justice, mercy, and compassion. It forbids oppression and bloodshed, and it commands kindness and the preservation of life. The One who revealed this verse is the same Allah who created you, loves you, and wants goodness for you. Open your heart to His message, and you will find a path that leads to true peace — peace with your Creator, with yourself, and with all of humanity.
