Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Yubhithu (يَبْحَثُ): To scratch, dig, or turn over the earth.
  • Su'ah (سَوْءَةَ): The private parts, nakedness, or here, the dead body of his brother.
  • Yuwari (يُوَارِي): To cover, conceal, or bury.
  • Ya waylata (يَا وَيْلَتَا): An expression of intense regret and distress, meaning "Woe to me!" or "Alas!"

Tafsir (Explanation):

After Cain (Qabil) killed his brother Abel (Habil) out of jealousy and arrogance, he was left standing over the body, completely lost. He had no idea what to do with his brother's remains. The earth was vast, but his mind was empty of any solution. He had committed the crime, but he had no knowledge of how to handle its aftermath.

So Allah, in His infinite mercy and wisdom, sent a raven. This was no ordinary event—it was a divine lesson. The raven began to scratch and dig into the earth, making a hole, and then buried a dead raven in it. This was a direct, visual demonstration for Cain to show him exactly how to cover and bury his brother's body.

When Cain saw this, he was struck with amazement and shame. He cried out: "Oh, woe to me! Am I so incapable that I cannot even do what this raven has done—to cover the body of my own brother?" His words reveal a deep self-reproach. He then buried his brother and became among those who regret their actions.

Yet, his regret was not for the murder itself—it was for the practical failure of not knowing what to do afterward, and for the disgrace he brought upon himself. Some scholars note that his remorse was more about the consequences he faced—the loss of his parents' love and the weight of his sin—than about true repentance for the killing. He was a disobedient sinner, not necessarily a disbeliever, but his actions set a tragic precedent for humanity.

A Call to Reflection:

This story is a profound reminder of how far a soul can fall when it lets envy and anger control it. Cain had everything—a direct connection to a righteous father, the honor of offering a sacrifice to Allah—but his jealousy destroyed him. He went from being a son of a prophet to a murderer, and then to a man humiliated by a raven's simple act.

Yet, in this very moment, there is a lesson of hope: Allah did not abandon Cain. Even after the crime, Allah sent guidance—through a bird—to teach him how to honor the dead. This shows us that Allah's mercy is vast, and He never leaves His creation without guidance, even when they sin. The door of repentance is always open, but true repentance requires humility and the willingness to learn, even from the smallest of Allah's creatures.

Dear reader, look at how a raven taught a human being. If we humble ourselves, Allah can teach us through anything—a leaf falling, a bird digging, or a verse of the Qur'an. Do not let pride blind you as it blinded Cain. When you err, do not persist in arrogance; instead, say, "My Lord, I have wronged myself, so forgive me." And know that the greatest loss is not failing to bury a body—it is failing to bury your ego and submit to your Creator.

📜 Verse 29-33 — Al-Maidah

Indeed I want you to obtain [thereby] my sin and your sin so you will be among the companions of the Fire. And that is the recompense of wrongdoers."
And his soul permitted to him the murder of his brother, so he killed him and became among the losers.
Then Allah sent a crow searching in the ground to show him how to hide the disgrace of his brother. He said, "O woe to me! Have I failed to be like this crow and hide the body of my brother?" And he became of the regretful.
Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors.
Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment,
