📖 English Meaning
Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment,

Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Meanings:

  • Yuḥāribūn Allāha wa Rasūlahu: Those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger—meaning those who oppose Allah’s commands, transgress His limits, and spread enmity against His religion and His Prophet (peace be upon him).
  • Yasʿawna fī al-arḍi fasādan: They strive and exert themselves in the land to cause corruption—such as killing innocent people, robbing them, and terrorizing the community.
  • Yuṣallabū: To be crucified—that is, to be fastened to a wooden cross or similar structure as a form of execution.
  • Min khilāf: From opposite sides—meaning the right hand and the left foot are cut off together.
  • Yunfaw min al-arḍ: To be exiled from the land—banished to another place and imprisoned there until their repentance becomes evident.

Tafsir (Explanation) of the Verse:

This noble verse lays down the divine punishment for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and spread corruption in the land—those who take up arms to terrorize innocent people, kill them, and seize their wealth, thereby destabilizing society and violating the sanctity of life and property that Islam holds so dear.

For such criminals, Allah has prescribed a severe deterrent punishment, to be applied by the Muslim ruler according to the nature and gravity of their crime. The punishment is one of four options:

  1. Execution—if they have killed someone, they are to be put to death.
  2. Crucifixion—if they have killed and also robbed, they may be executed and then crucified as a warning to others.
  3. Amputation of the right hand and left foot—if they have robbed but not killed, their limbs are cut off from opposite sides as a mark of disgrace.
  4. Exile—if they have terrorized people without killing or robbing, they are banished from the land and imprisoned until their repentance becomes clear.

This punishment is not merely a worldly penalty; it carries with it humiliation and shame in this life, and for those who persist in their evil without repenting, there awaits a tremendous punishment in the Hereafter—a punishment far greater and more lasting than any worldly sanction.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, ponder the wisdom of this divine legislation. Islam is a religion of mercy, justice, and protection. It does not seek to harm people, but rather to safeguard their lives, their wealth, and their peace. When a person dares to wage war against Allah and His Messenger, they are not merely attacking individuals—they are attacking the very fabric of a just society and the divine order that guarantees safety for all.

This verse teaches us the sanctity of life and the seriousness of spreading corruption on earth. It reminds us that true peace comes from submitting to Allah's guidance and respecting the rights of others. How beautiful is the religion that protects the weak, secures the roads, and ensures that no one lives in fear of criminals!

Yet, even in this severe punishment, there is a door of mercy left open—for if the offenders repent before they are apprehended, their punishment is waived, as the following verse clarifies. This shows us the depth of Allah's compassion: He hates sin, but He loves the sinner who returns to Him.

Let us, therefore, be grateful for the justice of Islam, and let us strive to be people of peace and righteousness, avoiding all forms of corruption and harm. And let us always remember that the ultimate success lies in obeying Allah and His Messenger, for in that obedience is the honor of this world and the bliss of the Hereafter. May Allah guide us all to the straight path.

📜 Verse 31-35 — Al-Maidah

Then Allah sent a crow searching in the ground to show him how to hide the disgrace of his brother. He said, "O woe to me! Have I failed to be like this crow and hide the body of my brother?" And he became of the regretful.
Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors.
Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment,
Except for those who return [repenting] before you apprehend them. And know that Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
O you who have believed, fear Allah and seek the means [of nearness] to Him and strive in His cause that you may succeed.
