Surah Al-Maidah — Verse 52

Despite claiming to be part of the Muslim community, they rush eagerly to befriend and support the Jews and Christians, seeking their alliance and protection. When questioned about this behavior, they offer a weak excuse, saying: "We fear that a turn of fortune may strike us"—meaning that they worry the Muslims might lose, and then they would suffer harm alongside them.

Allah responds to their hollow justification by declaring that He may bring about victory for His Messenger and the believers, or decree an affair from His own wisdom—such as the expulsion of the Jews from their strongholds—that would completely overturn their calculations. On that day, these hypocrites will wake up to find themselves overwhelmed with regret for what they had secretly harbored in their hearts: their hidden loyalty to the enemies of Islam and their lack of trust in Allah's promise of victory.

This verse serves as a powerful reminder that those who place their hopes in worldly powers and alliances rather than in Allah will inevitably face disappointment. The hypocrites based their decisions on fear and short-term calculations, but Allah's decree supersedes all human planning. When the promised victory came and Islam prevailed, their secret inclinations were exposed, and their regret was complete—both in this world and in the Hereafter.

How beautiful is the believer's position! When we face trials, we do not waver or seek protection from those who oppose Allah's religion. Instead, we stand firm, knowing that Allah's promise is true: "Indeed, Allah will defend those who have believed" (Al-Hajj: 38). The victory of Islam is not dependent on numbers or alliances, but on the sincere faith and steadfastness of its followers.
