Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Jahda aymanihim (جَهْدَ أَيْمَانِهِمْ): Their most solemn and emphatic oaths, sworn with the utmost sincerity and strength.
- Habitat (حَبِطَتْ): Became null and void; completely wasted and rendered worthless.
- Khasireen (خَاسِرِينَ): The losers; those who have suffered total loss in both this world and the Hereafter.
Explanation of the Verse:
On the Day when the true nature of the hypocrites is exposed, and the believers witness the downfall of those who had pretended to be among them, the believers will turn to one another in astonishment and say: "Are these the very people who swore by Allah with their most solemn and emphatic oaths that they were truly with us—sharing our faith, our loyalty, and our cause?"
What a shocking revelation! Those who once proclaimed their allegiance with such convincing vows were, in reality, nothing but frauds. Their deeds—though they may have appeared righteous on the surface—were built upon hypocrisy and falsehood. Therefore, all their efforts and good works in this worldly life have become utterly void and worthless, for they were never accompanied by sincere faith. They have lost everything: in this world, they are disgraced and exposed before the believers, and in the Hereafter, they face a painful punishment. Their end is utter ruin and complete loss.
A Call to Reflection and Sincerity:
This verse is a profound reminder for every soul to examine the state of their own heart. Allah, the Most High, knows what lies within our breasts, and no oath or outward display can deceive Him. The hypocrites thought they could fool the believers, but Allah exposed their reality in this life and sealed their fate in the next.
Dear Muslim, let this be a lesson to you: sincerity (ikhlas) is the very soul of your deeds. A deed, no matter how great, is but a hollow shell if the heart is not filled with true faith in Allah and love for His Messenger ﷺ. Do not be like those who say one thing and hide another. Instead, be among the truthful—those whose words match their actions, and whose hearts are pure before their Lord.
And rejoice, for Allah has promised the sincere believers a great reward. He sees your efforts, knows your struggles, and will never let your good deeds go to waste. So hold firm to your faith, purify your intentions, and be certain that Allah’s promise is true. The believers will be victorious, and the hypocrites will be the losers—both in this world and the next.
