Explanation of the Verse:
After mentioning the earlier prophets, Allah tells us that He sent His messengers in succession, following in the footsteps of Noah and Abraham. Then, He singled out Jesus, son of Mary, as the last prophet sent to the Children of Israel, and granted him the Gospel—a book of guidance and light. Allah placed in the hearts of those who truly followed Jesus a profound tenderness and mercy, so that they loved one another and cared for each other with deep compassion.
However, these followers then invented monasticism—a practice of extreme asceticism, withdrawing from the pleasures of life, secluding themselves in monasteries, and abstaining from marriage and lawful worldly joys. This was not something Allah had prescribed or made obligatory upon them. They adopted it of their own accord, sincerely hoping to attain Allah's pleasure through this extra devotion. Yet, they did not observe it as it truly should have been observed. Many of them fell short, abandoning even the obligations they had placed upon themselves, and the practice became a burden they could not uphold. Some even drifted away from the true path of Jesus altogether.
Despite this, Allah rewarded those among them who remained sincere and believed in Him and His messengers—especially those who later believed in Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and followed him. Their reward was granted in full. But many of them turned away from obedience, rejecting the final messenger and thus deviating from the straight path.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every seeker of truth. It shows that Allah's religion is one of balance and ease—He does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear, nor does He require extreme hardship as a condition of faith. The monasticism invented by the followers of Jesus was born of a sincere desire to please Allah, yet it was not commanded, and even they could not uphold it. This teaches us that true devotion lies not in inventing new forms of worship or imposing unnecessary hardships upon ourselves, but in submitting to what Allah has revealed and following His messengers with sincerity and moderation.
Islam came to perfect this balance. It teaches us to worship Allah with love and hope, to enjoy the lawful pleasures of this world while keeping our hearts attached to the Hereafter, and to be merciful and compassionate toward one another. The door of guidance remains open. Just as Allah rewarded the sincere believers among the followers of Jesus, He promises the same to anyone who sincerely believes in Muhammad (peace be upon him) and follows his message. So let us seize this opportunity, embrace the final revelation, and strive to be among those who truly uphold the trust of faith—not by inventing new burdens, but by living the beautiful, balanced way of life that Allah has chosen for us.
