Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Nubuwwah (النُّبُوَّة): Prophethood — the special selection by Allah of certain individuals to receive divine revelation and guide humanity.
- Al-Kitab (الْكِتَاب): The Book — here referring to the divinely revealed scriptures, including the Torah, the Psalms (Zabur), the Gospel (Injil), and the Qur'an.
- Muhtad (مُّهْتَدٍ): One who is guided — a person who has found and followed the straight path of truth.
- Fasiqun (فَاسِقُونَ): Those who deviate — people who have turned away from obedience to Allah, transgressing His commands.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this noble verse, Allah reminds us of His great favor upon humanity by sending two of His greatest messengers: Prophet Nuh (Noah) and Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), peace be upon them both. Nuh was sent to his people as a warner and a guide, enduring immense hardship for centuries in calling them to monotheism. Ibrahim was sent as a father of monotheism, a friend of Allah (Khalilullah), who stood firm against idolatry and was tested with tremendous trials, which he passed with unwavering faith.
Then Allah mentions an extraordinary blessing: He placed prophethood and the revealed Books in the lineage of these two noble prophets. From their descendants came a long chain of messengers — including Musa (Moses), Dawud (David), Isa (Jesus), and finally the seal of all prophets, Muhammad (peace be upon him and all of them). The four great scriptures — the Torah, the Psalms, the Gospel, and the Qur'an — all came through the offspring of Ibrahim, making his family a vessel of divine guidance for all of humanity.
Yet, despite this immense honor and privilege, the verse tells us a profound truth: "Among them are those who are guided, but many of them are deviators." This means that even within the lineage of these great prophets, not everyone accepted the truth. Some embraced guidance and followed the path of righteousness, while many others turned away, disobeyed Allah, and corrupted the message that was entrusted to them.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse carries a powerful lesson for every believer. Having noble lineage, a prestigious background, or even being born into a family of scholars or prophets' descendants does not guarantee salvation. What matters is your own personal faith, your sincere actions, and your obedience to Allah. The honor lies not in who your ancestors were, but in how you live your own life in submission to the Creator.
Allah, in His infinite mercy, has opened the door of guidance to every human being — regardless of their family, tribe, or origin. He says elsewhere in the Qur'an: *"Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you"* (Al-Hujurat: 13). So do not rely on the deeds of others, and do not despair if your background is humble. The path of guidance is open to all who sincerely seek it.
Let this verse inspire you to be among the *muhtadin* — the guided ones — and not among the *fasiqun* — the deviators. Strive daily to increase your faith, purify your intentions, and follow the teachings of the final Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), whose message is the greatest mercy and the complete guidance for all of humanity until the end of time. May Allah make us among those who hear the truth and follow the best of it.
