Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Aymanahum (أَيْمَانَهُمْ): Their oaths — specifically, the false and deceptive oaths they swore.
- Junnah (جُنَّةً): A shield or protective cover — something used to guard oneself from harm.
- Saddoo (صَدُّوا): They turned away or blocked — both themselves and others from the path of truth.
- Sabeel Allah (سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ): The way of Allah — Islam, faith, and all that leads to His pleasure.
- Adhabun Muheen (عَذَابٌ مُّهِينٌ): A humiliating punishment — one that degrades and disgraces the one who receives it.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah exposes the inner reality of the hypocrites — those who outwardly claimed faith but inwardly harbored disbelief. They took their oaths — the very words they uttered to deceive the believers — as a shield, a protective cover to save their lives and wealth. By swearing falsely that they were Muslims, they escaped the sword of jihad and the penalties that would otherwise befall them for their unbelief.
But their deception did not stop there. Through these very oaths, they actively discouraged others from the path of Allah. They sowed doubt, weakened the resolve of the believers, and turned people away from the truth of Islam. Their false assurances and hollow promises were tools of misguidance, used to block the way to Allah and to undermine the strength of the Muslim community.
For all of this, Allah promises them a punishment that is not merely severe but humiliating — a disgrace that will strip away every pretense of honor they once held. In the Hereafter, their masks will be removed, their lies exposed, and they will face a torment that brings them low, forever marked by shame and ignominy.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is a powerful reminder of the sanctity of truth and the gravity of deception. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, does not let hypocrisy go unnoticed — even if it is hidden from human eyes, it is fully known to Him. The hypocrites thought their oaths would protect them in this world, but they could not protect them from the justice of Allah in the next.
Let this be a lesson for us all: sincerity in faith and honesty in speech are among the greatest virtues a believer can possess. When we are truthful, Allah honors us; when we are deceptive, even if we gain the world, we lose our souls. The path of Allah is open to all who seek it with a pure heart — do not let anything, not even fear or worldly gain, turn you away from it.
And know that Allah’s mercy is vast for those who repent and return to Him. But for those who persist in arrogance and deceit, His punishment is certain. So choose the path of truth, for it leads to honor in this life and eternal bliss in the Hereafter.
