Word Meanings:
- Aʿadda (أَعَدَّ): Prepared or made ready.
- ʿAdhāban shadīdan (عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا): A severe, intense, and painful punishment.
- Sāʾa (سَاءَ): Evil, wicked, or detestable — used here to express extreme disapproval.
- Mā kānū yaʿmalūn (مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ): What they used to do — referring to their deeds and actions.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah — the Most Just and All-Knowing — has prepared for these hypocrites a punishment that is extremely severe and agonizing, reserved for them in the Hereafter. This is not an ordinary punishment; it is one of utmost intensity, designed to match the gravity of their crimes. They will be cast into the lowest depths of Hellfire, where the torment is most intense and unrelenting.
The verse then delivers a devastating verdict on their conduct: "Indeed, evil is what they used to do." Their deeds were not merely mistakes or minor faults — they were profoundly wicked. They engaged in hypocrisy, swearing false oaths to deceive the believers, spreading discord, and opposing the truth while pretending to support it. Their outward appearance showed faith, but their hearts were filled with disbelief and malice. They used their tongues to make excuses and their oaths as shields to protect themselves from accountability, all while plotting against the community of believers.
This verse serves as a powerful reminder that Allah is fully aware of every deed, no matter how hidden or disguised. The hypocrites thought they could deceive the believers, but they could never deceive Allah. Their punishment is certain, and their evil deeds have been recorded and will be repaid in full.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse carries a profound lesson for all of us. It warns us against the dangers of hypocrisy — saying one thing and believing another, or showing piety while concealing corruption. Allah does not look at our outward appearances alone; He examines our hearts and our true intentions.
Let this be a moment of self-reflection: Are our words and actions in harmony? Do we strive for sincerity in our worship and dealings? The path of honesty and integrity is the path of the believers, and it leads to Allah’s pleasure and eternal bliss. The path of hypocrisy leads only to ruin and severe punishment.
Turn to Allah with a sincere heart, seek His forgiveness, and strive to be among those whose deeds are pure and whose intentions are upright. Allah is Most Merciful to those who repent and reform, and His door of forgiveness is always open. Do not let the fleeting pleasures of this world deceive you, for the Hereafter is far greater and everlasting. Choose the path that leads to Allah’s mercy, and you will find success in this life and the next.
