Word Meanings:
- Nāfaqū (نَافَقُوا): Those who outwardly professed faith while inwardly concealing disbelief — the hypocrites.
- Ikhwānihim (إِخْوَانِهِمْ): Their brothers in disbelief and alliance, not in religion.
- Lā nuṭīʿu fīkum aḥadan (لَا نُطِيعُ فِيكُمْ أَحَدًا): We will not obey anyone who tries to prevent us from supporting you or who asks us to abandon you.
- Qūtil tum (قُوتِلْتُمْ): If you are fought against — i.e., if war is waged upon you.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Prophet, have you not observed the behavior of the hypocrites — those who claim faith with their tongues but harbor disbelief in their hearts? Look at how they address their allies among the disbelieving People of the Book, specifically the Jewish tribes of Banu Nadir and Banu Qurayzah. They say to them: "If you are expelled from your homes and your land by the Muslims, we will most certainly leave with you. We will never obey anyone — not the Prophet, nor the believers — who asks us to abandon you or to stand idle while you are driven out. And if you are fought against, we will surely come to your aid and fight alongside you against your enemies."
But Allah — the All-Knowing, the All-Witnessing — declares plainly that these hypocrites are absolute liars in what they promise. They have no intention of fulfilling these grand words. Their pledges are empty, their loyalty is false, and their courage evaporates the moment real trials arise. Allah bears witness to their deception, for nothing is hidden from Him — neither what they conceal in their hearts nor what they utter with their tongues.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse unveils the reality of hypocrisy — a disease of the heart that Allah exposes so that the believers may remain vigilant. The hypocrites are masters of empty promises; they speak boldly when there is no cost, but when the moment of truth arrives, they retreat and abandon their allies. This is a timeless lesson for every Muslim: let your words be matched by your deeds, and let your loyalty be sincere — to Allah first, then to His Messenger and the community of believers. Do not be like those who promise support but deliver nothing, for Allah sees all, and He will expose every hidden intention on the Day when secrets are laid bare.
The beauty of this Quranic revelation is that it protects the believers from being deceived by false allies. It teaches us to place our trust in Allah alone, not in the fleeting promises of people. When you rely on Allah, He suffices you; when you trust in people, you will be disappointed. So hold firm to the rope of Allah, be truthful in your words, and sincere in your actions — for Allah loves the truthful and abhors the liars. This is the path of honor in this world and the key to success in the Hereafter.
