Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Ghilla (غِلًّا): Hidden rancor, malice, envy, or hatred that resides in the heart.
  • Sabaqūnā bil-Īmān (سَبَقُونَا بِالْإِيمَانِ): Those who preceded us in faith — i.e., the early believers who embraced Islam before us.
  • Ra’ūf (رَءُوفٌ): Extremely kind, compassionate, and gentle towards His servants.
  • Raḥīm (رَحِيمٌ): Merciful, bestowing His mercy upon those who seek it.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This blessed verse paints a beautiful portrait of the true Muslim community — a community bound together by love, humility, and mutual care across generations. After Allah praises the Muhājirūn (the emigrants who left their homes for the sake of Allah) and the Anṣār (the helpers who welcomed them with open arms), He now turns to the next generation — the Tābi‘ūn and all believers who come after them until the Day of Judgment.

These believers, whom Allah describes with honor, are characterized by a specific supplication that flows from their hearts. They say: *"Our Lord, forgive us and forgive our brothers and sisters who preceded us in faith."* This is a profound lesson in humility — they ask for forgiveness not only for themselves but also for those who came before them, acknowledging the virtue and precedence of the early generations. They do not claim superiority over them; rather, they recognize their own shortcomings and pray for their predecessors' pardon.

Then they add: *"And do not place in our hearts any rancor or ill-feeling towards those who believe."* This is a powerful prayer for inner purity — asking Allah to cleanse their hearts from envy, hatred, or resentment towards any believer. The verse teaches us that a true believer's heart is free from malice; it is a heart that loves for its fellow Muslims what it loves for itself.

The verse concludes with the supplication: *"Our Lord, indeed You are Most Kind, Most Merciful."* This is an acknowledgment of Allah's perfect attributes — that He is gentle with His servants and showers His mercy upon them.

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every Muslim: we must love the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, speak well of them, and pray for them. It also teaches us to extend this love to all believers — past and present — and to purify our hearts from any trace of hatred or ill-will. Whoever harbors malice towards the companions of the Prophet ﷺ or any believer is not included in this beautiful description that Allah has given to His righteous servants.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear Muslim, look at the beauty of this Islamic brotherhood! It transcends time and place — connecting you to the Prophet ﷺ, his companions, and every sincere believer who ever lived. When you pray for those who came before you, you are following the path of the righteous. When you cleanse your heart of envy and hatred, you are unlocking the doors of Allah's mercy. This is the pure, unadulterated spirit of Islam — a religion that builds hearts, unites communities, and elevates souls. Embrace this teaching, and let your heart be a garden of love for all believers, for indeed, Allah is Ra’ūf and Raḥīm with those who turn to Him in sincerity.

📜 Verse 8-12 — Al-Hashr

For the poor emigrants who were expelled from their homes and their properties, seeking bounty from Allah and [His] approval and supporting Allah and His Messenger, [there is also a share]. Those are the truthful.
And [also for] those who were settled in al-Madinah and [adopted] the faith before them. They love those who emigrated to them and find not any want in their breasts of what the emigrants were given but give [them] preference over themselves, even though they are in privation. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.
And [there is a share for] those who came after them, saying, "Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful."
Have you not considered those who practice hypocrisy, saying to their brothers who have disbelieved among the People of the Scripture, "If you are expelled, we will surely leave with you, and we will not obey, in regard to you, anyone - ever; and if you are fought, we will surely aid you." But Allah testifies that they are liars.
If they are expelled, they will not leave with them, and if they are fought, they will not aid them. And [even] if they should aid them, they will surely turn their backs; then [thereafter] they will not be aided.
