Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-Ba'sa' (الْبَأْسَاءِ): Severe hardship, poverty, and distress that afflicts one's wealth and livelihood.
  • Al-Darra' (الضَّرَّاءِ): Physical affliction, such as illness, pain, or bodily harm.
  • Yatadarra'un (يَتَضَرَّعُونَ): To humble oneself, supplicate earnestly, and submit in complete humility before Allah.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O Messenger, know that We sent messengers to many nations before you, calling them to the worship of Allah alone. Yet, they rejected the truth and turned away arrogantly from what was brought to them. So, as a consequence of their denial, We seized them with trials and tribulations—striking their wealth through poverty, scarcity, and hardship, and striking their bodies through illness, pain, and affliction. Why did We do this? So that their hearts might soften, their pride might break, and they would turn back to their Lord in humility, supplication, and sincere repentance. The purpose of such trials was not punishment for its own sake, but a divine call to awaken the soul, reminding them of their utter need for Allah and drawing them back to the path of submission and devotion.

This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: hardship and adversity are not merely random misfortunes; they are often signs of divine mercy in disguise—opportunities to reconnect with our Creator, to shed the layers of arrogance and self-sufficiency, and to realize that true peace lies only in turning to Allah with a humble heart. When trials come, let them be a reminder to raise your hands in supplication, to soften your tongue with remembrance, and to renew your covenant with your Lord. For the One who tests is the One who loves to hear His servant's voice in humble prayer, and He is ever ready to respond, forgive, and elevate those who return to Him.

📜 Verse 40-44 — Al-An'am

Say, "Have you considered: if there came to you the punishment of Allah or there came to you the Hour - is it other than Allah you would invoke, if you should be truthful?"
No, it is Him [alone] you would invoke, and He would remove that for which you invoked Him if He willed, and you would forget what you associate [with Him].
And We have already sent [messengers] to nations before you, [O Muhammad]; then We seized them with poverty and hardship that perhaps they might humble themselves [to Us].
Then why, when Our punishment came to them, did they not humble themselves? But their hearts became hardened, and Satan made attractive to them that which they were doing.
So when they forgot that by which they had been reminded, We opened to them the doors of every [good] thing until, when they rejoiced in that which they were given, We seized them suddenly, and they were [then] in despair.
