Word Meanings:

  • بِجَهَالَةٍ (with ignorance): This refers to committing a sin without fully comprehending its consequences, or without proper knowledge of its prohibition — even if one knows it is forbidden, the recklessness and heedlessness of the act is termed "ignorance."
  • ثُمَّ تَابَ (then repents): To turn back from the sin, regret it sincerely, and resolve not to return to it.
  • وَأَصْلَحَ (and makes amends): To rectify one's deeds, purify one's intention, and follow up the repentance with righteous actions.

Explanation of the Verse:

When those who sincerely believe in Allah's signs and in the truth of your message, O Prophet, come to you — seeking guidance or asking about repentance from their past sins — respond to them with honor and warmth. Greet them with the greeting of peace, saying, "Peace be upon you," as a mark of respect and kindness. Then give them the glad tidings that your Lord has decreed mercy upon Himself, out of His sheer generosity and grace. This means that Allah, the Most High, has made it His binding promise that whoever among you commits a sin — whether out of genuine ignorance or momentary heedlessness — and then truly repents, turns back to Allah, and reforms their conduct, then Allah will forgive them. For He is the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful, and His mercy encompasses all who seek it with sincere hearts.

This verse is a beautiful door of hope opened for every sinner. It teaches us that no matter how great our shortcomings, Allah's mercy is greater. The Prophet ﷺ would greet such believers with peace and would be the first to extend the greeting when he saw them, embodying the compassion and gentleness that Islam instills in its followers.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, look at the beauty of this divine invitation! Allah does not turn away those who come to Him with their faults — rather, He welcomes them with peace and mercy. The very first word they hear is "Salam" — a greeting of safety and tranquility. This is the nature of Islam: it does not push people away because of their sins; it pulls them closer through repentance. The Prophet ﷺ was commanded to be the bearer of this good news, and every Muslim today carries the same message: no matter how far you have strayed, the door of repentance is wide open, and Allah's mercy is vaster than your sins. Come back to Him, and you will find Him waiting with forgiveness and love. This is the religion of hope, the path of peace, and the way to eternal success.

📜 Verse 52-56 — Al-An'am

And do not send away those who call upon their Lord morning and afternoon, seeking His countenance. Not upon you is anything of their account and not upon them is anything of your account. So were you to send them away, you would [then] be of the wrongdoers.
And thus We have tried some of them through others that the disbelievers might say, "Is it these whom Allah has favored among us?" Is not Allah most knowing of those who are grateful?
And when those come to you who believe in Our verses, say, "Peace be upon you. Your Lord has decreed upon Himself mercy: that any of you who does wrong out of ignorance and then repents after that and corrects himself - indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful."
And thus do We detail the verses, and [thus] the way of the criminals will become evident.
Say, "Indeed, I have been forbidden to worship those you invoke besides Allah." Say, "I will not follow your desires, for I would then have gone astray, and I would not be of the [rightly] guided."
