Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Fatannā (فَتَنَّا): We tested, tried, or put to trial — a divine test that reveals one's true character.
- Manna Allahu 'alayhim (مَنَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ): Allah bestowed His favor and grace upon them — here, referring to the blessing of guidance to Islam.
- Ash-Shākirīn (الشَّاكِرِينَ): Those who are truly grateful to Allah for His blessings, by using them in obedience and acknowledging His favor.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah (Glorious and Exalted be He) tells us that He has tested people by means of one another. He created human beings with different circumstances and abilities — some rich, some poor; some strong, some weak; some of high social standing, others of humble origin. This diversity is not a flaw in creation, but a deliberate divine wisdom. Through this variety, Allah tests how people respond to one another and to His blessings.
When the wealthy and powerful disbelievers saw poor and humble believers embracing Islam before them, they were filled with arrogance and disdain. They said mockingly: "Are these the ones whom Allah has favored with guidance from among us?" They could not comprehend that Allah would choose simple, poor people over them. Their hearts were blinded by pride, and they assumed that worldly status was a measure of divine favor — not realizing that true honor lies in faith and righteousness.
Allah responds to their arrogance with a profound question: "Is Allah not the Most Knowing of those who are grateful?" This is a rhetorical question that affirms an undeniable truth — indeed, Allah knows best who is sincerely grateful for His blessings. He knows the hearts that are humble, thankful, and receptive to guidance, and He grants them the light of faith. Likewise, He knows those who are ungrateful and arrogant, and He leaves them to their own devices as a consequence of their pride.
The lesson here is timeless: worldly wealth and status are not indicators of Allah's ultimate favor. The greatest blessing is guidance to Islam, and Allah bestows it upon whom He wills — often upon those with pure hearts and sincere gratitude, regardless of their social standing.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, let this verse open your eyes to a beautiful truth: Allah does not look at your wealth, your appearance, or your lineage. He looks at your heart and your gratitude. The companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) included both the rich and the poor, but the most beloved to Allah were those with the most sincere faith.
Do not let pride prevent you from accepting the truth, no matter who it comes from. And do not underestimate the value of a humble believer — for in the sight of Allah, they may be far greater than those who appear mighty in this world. Be among the grateful, and Allah will guide you to what is best. Gratitude is the key that opens the doors of divine favor, and humility is the path that leads to eternal success.
