Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- "Makhzum" (مَكْظُوم): Filled with intense grief, sorrow, or suppressed anger that overwhelms the heart.
- "Sahib al-Hut" (صَاحِبِ الْحُوتِ): The companion of the whale — Prophet Yunus (Jonah), peace be upon him.
- "Nada" (نَادَىٰ): Called out, supplicated, or invoked — here referring to his cry to Allah from within the whale's belly.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah addresses His beloved Messenger, Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), with a command that carries both comfort and guidance: "So be patient with the decree of your Lord." This is a call to endure with steadfastness and trust — to accept whatever Allah has willed, including the delay of victory, the persistence of opposition, and the trials of conveying the message. Patience here is not mere passivity; it is active perseverance, rooted in certainty that Allah's wisdom is perfect and His timing is best.
Then comes a profound warning: "And do not be like the companion of the whale." This refers to Prophet Yunus (peace be upon him), who, in a moment of intense frustration and impatience with his people's rejection, left them in anger before Allah had granted him permission. He boarded a ship, was cast into the sea, and swallowed by a great whale. In that darkness — the darkness of the night, the sea, and the whale's belly — he cried out to his Lord, "while he was filled with grief" (makhzum). His supplication was sincere and desperate: *"La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu min al-zalimin"* — "There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers" (21:87).
The lesson is clear: even the most noble of prophets can feel the weight of impatience, but the believer is called to a higher standard. Do not let haste or frustration lead you to act against Allah's decree. Instead, trust that His plan unfolds in the perfect time, and that relief comes after patience, just as it came for Yunus — when Allah accepted his repentance and brought him forth from the whale's darkness, purified and chosen for His message.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This verse is a gentle yet powerful reminder for every believer. Life is filled with moments when we feel overwhelmed — when the path seems long, the obstacles seem many, and the answers seem delayed. In those moments, Allah invites us to patience, not as a burden, but as a key to unlocking His mercy. He reminds us that even the best of creation needed to learn this lesson, and that our own struggles are opportunities to draw closer to Him.
Let this verse inspire you to surrender your worries to Allah, to trust His timing, and to remember that every trial carries within it the seed of a greater blessing. The story of Yunus teaches us that no matter how deep our darkness, a sincere call to Allah is never unanswered. So be patient, keep your heart connected to your Lord, and know that His help is nearer than you think — for after hardship comes ease, and after patience comes victory.
