Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- الْغَيْبُ (Al-Ghayb): The unseen, the hidden knowledge of all things, including the Preserved Tablet (Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuz), which contains the decree and knowledge of everything.
- يَكْتُبُونَ (Yaktubun): They write down — meaning they record or dictate what they claim, as if they have access to divine knowledge and can document it.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse poses a profound rhetorical question to those who reject the message of truth. After the previous verse asked whether the Prophet (peace be upon him) sought any worldly reward from them — a burden that would weigh them down — this verse challenges their very foundation of knowledge.
The meaning is: Do these disbelievers possess knowledge of the unseen? Do they have access to the Preserved Tablet, the source of all divine decree and wisdom, so that they can write down from it whatever they please? Are they able to record their own claims — that they are better than the believers, that they will be honored in the Hereafter, and that their rejection of the truth is justified — as if they were drawing from certain, divine knowledge?
The answer is an emphatic "No." They have no such knowledge. Their claims are nothing but conjecture, guesswork, and arrogance. They have no proof, no revelation, and no access to the unseen. They simply invent arguments to support their position, but these arguments are hollow and baseless.
This verse serves as a powerful reminder for all of us: no human being possesses knowledge of the unseen except what Allah reveals to His chosen messengers. Anyone who makes claims about the unseen — whether about their own fate, the fate of others, or the nature of the Hereafter — without divine guidance is merely guessing. And guesswork can never stand before the truth of Allah's revelation.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on this: how often do we make assumptions about our own destiny or the destiny of others without any certain knowledge? How often do we rely on our own opinions rather than turning to the clear guidance of the Quran and the Sunnah? This verse invites us to humility — to recognize that true knowledge belongs to Allah alone, and that the path to success lies in submitting to His revelation, not in fabricating our own. The Quran is the only book that comes from the One who knows all — so hold fast to it, and you will never be lost.
