Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • أَنذِرْ (Andhir): To warn, to caution, or to make someone aware of a danger so they can avoid it.
  • عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ (ʿAdhābun Alīm): A painful, severe, and agonizing punishment.

The Interpretation of the Verse:

In this profound opening verse of Surah Nuh, Allah (Glorious is He) declares that He sent the Prophet Noah (peace be upon him) to his people with a clear and urgent mission. The command was to warn his nation before the arrival of a painful punishment—a punishment that would befall them in this world through the great flood, and in the Hereafter through the torment of Hellfire, if they persisted in their disbelief and idol worship.

This verse highlights the immense mercy and justice of Allah. He does not destroy a people without first sending them a warner, giving them the opportunity to repent and return to the truth. Noah was not sent to collect taxes, to seek power, or to gain worldly status—he was sent as a compassionate guide, carrying a message of salvation. His task was to awaken his people from their spiritual slumber, to shake their hearts with the reality of the consequences of their actions, and to call them toward the worship of the One True God.

The phrase "from before" (min qabl) emphasizes the urgency of the warning. It is a call to act *now*, before it is too late. This is a timeless lesson for every human being: the door of repentance is open, but it will not remain open forever. The warning is not a threat out of anger, but an invitation out of love—a father warning his child of a fire so that the child may be saved.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, this verse is not merely a historical account; it is a living message for you and me. Just as Allah sent Noah to his people, He has sent the final Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him), with the same message of monotheism and the same warning. The painful punishment is real, but so is the boundless mercy of Allah. The moment you turn to Him, sincerely repent, and strive to obey Him, He wipes away your sins and grants you peace in this life and eternal bliss in the next.

Let the story of Noah inspire you to be among those who listen to the call of truth, who do not delay their repentance, and who race toward the pleasure of their Lord. The gates of mercy are wide open—do not wait until they close. Embrace faith, worship Allah alone, and follow His messengers, for that is the path to true success and salvation.
