Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Āthiman (آثِمًا): One who is deeply immersed in sins and disobedience, following their desires and lusts.
- Kafūran (كَفُورًا): One who is extreme in disbelief and ingratitude, persistently rejecting the truth and covering it with denial.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This noble verse carries a profound and timeless message for the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and, by extension, for every believer who carries the torch of truth. Allah commands His beloved Messenger: "So be patient with the decree of your Lord" — meaning, accept with steadfastness and tranquility whatever Allah has decreed for you, whether it be in matters of divine will (qadari) or in matters of religious obligation (shar'i). Patience here is not merely passive endurance; it is an active, trust-filled submission to Allah's wisdom, knowing that His plan is perfect even when we cannot see the full picture.
Then Allah adds a crucial directive: "And do not obey from among them a sinner or an extreme disbeliever." This is a clear warning against yielding to the pressures of those who are engrossed in their sinful desires (āthim) or those who have gone to extremes in their rejection of the truth (kafūr). The word "or" here indicates that both types are to be avoided — whether the one calling you to sin, or the one calling you to disbelief. Some scholars have noted that this "or" may also carry the sense of "and," meaning that the disbelievers often combine both traits: they are both sinful in their actions and extreme in their denial of the truth.
The wisdom in this command is profound: when you are steadfast upon the path of Allah, you will inevitably face opposition. The disbelievers and sinners will try to pull you away from your mission — some through alluring temptations, others through intimidation or mockery. Allah, in His infinite mercy, warns His Messenger and the believers not to give in to any of these pressures, no matter how persuasive or powerful the source may be.
This verse also teaches us a beautiful lesson about the nature of true freedom: the believer is not enslaved to the whims of people, nor to the changing tides of public opinion. Rather, the believer's loyalty is solely to Allah's command. When you anchor your heart in patience and obedience to your Lord, the attempts of others to sway you become insignificant, like the buzzing of a fly compared to the roar of the ocean.
Dear reader, reflect on how this guidance applies to your own life. In a world filled with voices calling you toward temporary pleasures, worldly gains, or even outright rejection of faith, this verse stands as a lighthouse. It reminds you that your ultimate success lies not in pleasing people, but in pleasing your Creator. The path of patience may be difficult, but its reward is eternal. And know that Allah, who commanded this patience, is always with those who are patient — He never abandons them, and He never lets their efforts go to waste.
So hold firm, dear believer, upon the truth. Do not let the sinners or the disbelievers dictate your steps. Your Lord is the Best of Planners, and His promise is true. Patience is the key to every door of goodness, and through it, you will find peace in this life and success in the next.
