Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • الصُّحُف (As-Suhuf): The records or books of deeds — the scrolls in which every person's actions, words, and intentions have been recorded by the noble angels.
  • نُشِرَت (Nushirat): Spread open, unfolded, and laid bare for all to see — nothing left folded, hidden, or concealed.

Explanation of the Verse:

When the Day of Judgment arrives, and the scrolls of every soul's deeds are unfolded and spread wide open, each person will be handed their own record. Nothing will remain hidden — every good deed, every word spoken, every secret intention, and every sin, whether done openly or in the darkest privacy, will be laid bare before its owner. The believer who strove in righteousness will find their book filled with light and goodness, while the negligent will see their record expose what they wished to forget. This unfolding is not merely a display — it is the moment of ultimate truth, when every soul confronts the reality of what it sent forth in this worldly life. The scrolls will not be read by others alone; each person will read their own book, and no injustice shall be done to anyone, even by a mustard seed's weight.

A Da'wah Reflection:

Dear reader, imagine standing before your own book — the one written by angels who never missed a single breath of yours. Every prayer you offered, every kindness you showed, every tear you shed in humility before Allah, and every moment you resisted sin for His sake — all recorded. But also every harsh word, every glance you lowered or failed to lower, every hour spent in heedlessness — all there. Yet here is the beauty of Islam: this very verse that fills hearts with awe is also a call to mercy. The same Allah who will unfold your scroll is the One who says, "Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins." So before that scroll is unfolded, you have the chance to rewrite its pages with repentance, with sincere return to Allah, with good deeds that erase bad ones. The unfolding is certain — but what your scroll contains is still in your hands today. Do not let a single page pass without filling it with what will make you smile on that Day. Turn to Allah now, and let your book be a witness for you, not against you.
