Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- السَّمَاء (As-Samaa): The sky or heavens.
- كُشِطَت (Kushitat): Stripped off, peeled away, or removed from its place — like skin being stripped from an animal or a cover being pulled off.
Explanation of the Verse:
When the sky is stripped away and removed from its place, folded up and pulled off like a skin being peeled from a slaughtered animal, that will be one of the mighty signs of the Day of Judgment. The heavens that stretch above us — vast, seemingly eternal, adorned with stars and planets — will be torn from their positions and rolled up, just as a scroll is rolled up. This imagery strikes awe into the heart: the very fabric of the universe, which humans have always gazed upon with wonder, will be dismantled by the command of its Creator. Nothing will remain as it was. The sky, which once sheltered the earth and held the stars, will be no more. This is a reminder that the world we know is temporary and will come to an end, and that the true, everlasting life is the one that awaits us after this great transformation.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, when you look up at the sky on a clear night, remember that this magnificent creation — with all its beauty and vastness — is but a sign of the power of Allah, and it will one day be folded away like a garment. If the heavens themselves are not permanent, then how can we attach our hearts to the fleeting pleasures of this world? Let this verse awaken in you a longing for the eternal abode, where the believers will dwell in gardens of bliss, and let it inspire you to prepare for that Day when every soul will be confronted with what it has sent forth. The stripping of the sky is not a scene of terror for the righteous; rather, it is a herald of justice and mercy for those who believed and did good deeds. So turn to your Lord now, before that Day arrives, and let your heart find peace in His remembrance — for He is the One who will fold the heavens and the earth, and He is the One who will reward His servants with what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has ever conceived.
