Surah Al-Mutaffifin — Verse 1

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse opens Surah Al-Mutaffifin with a stern warning: *"Woe to those who give short measure."* It is a declaration of destruction and severe punishment for those who defraud others in trade by tampering with scales and measurements. The verse targets a specific vice: when such people buy goods from others, they demand full measure and exact weight, but when they sell, they cheat by reducing the quantity or weight. This is a form of injustice that erodes trust and corrupts society.

The warning extends even further: if this is the fate of those who slightly reduce measure, what about those who steal outright or seize others' rights entirely? They are even more deserving of Allah's wrath. The verse implicitly reminds every trader and individual that Allah sees all actions and will hold everyone accountable. No cheat, no matter how small, escapes His knowledge. On the Day of Judgment, all people will stand before the Lord of the Worlds—humbled, exposed, and answerable for every grain and every ounce they took unjustly.
