Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- اكتالوا (iktālū): They took measurement (by volume or weight) from others.
- على الناس (ʿalā al-nās): From the people — meaning, when they receive what is due to them from others.
- يستوفون (yastawfūn): They take their full right completely, without any deficiency or shortfall.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse describes a specific category of people who are threatened with severe punishment: those who, when they receive what is owed to them from others — whether in measures of grain, liquids, weights, or any commodity — demand and take their full due, complete and perfect, with no tolerance for even the slightest shortfall. They are meticulous and exacting when it comes to their own rights.
However, the verse sets the stage for what follows in the next verse — that when these very same people give to others what is owed, they cheat and reduce the measure or weight. This contrast exposes a profound moral flaw: they are strict and precise for themselves, yet careless and fraudulent when dealing with others. This is a sign of selfishness and a lack of justice, as they apply one standard to themselves and another to their fellow human beings.
The deeper lesson here is that Islam calls for absolute fairness and integrity in all dealings. A true believer is one who treats others as they wish to be treated — giving full measure to others just as they demand full measure for themselves. The one who cheats others while being strict about their own rights reveals a heart that has not yet tasted the sweetness of justice and brotherhood.
This verse also serves as a warning that Allah, the All-Seeing, is fully aware of every transaction, every grain, and every ounce. Nothing escapes His knowledge, and He will hold every soul accountable for how they dealt with others. The one who thinks they can deceive people in this world should remember that they cannot deceive their Lord, and that the scales of justice in the Hereafter are far more precise than any earthly measure.
Let this be a reminder for every Muslim to be scrupulously honest in trade and daily interactions. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The truthful and trustworthy merchant will be with the prophets, the truthful, and the martyrs." What a noble company to aspire to! So choose integrity over greed, and honesty over short-term gain — for the reward with Allah is far greater and everlasting.
