Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- Infirū (انفِرُوا): Go forth, march out, or mobilize for a purpose. It implies a sense of urgency and readiness to move.
- Khifāfan wa thiqālan (خِفَافًا وَثِقَالًا): Light and heavy. This means whether you are young and strong, or old and weak; whether the task is easy or difficult; whether you are in a state of ease or hardship.
- Jāhidū (جَاهِدُوا): Strive, struggle, and exert your utmost effort. In this context, it refers to fighting in the cause of Allah.
- Fī sabīlillāh (فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ): In the path of Allah. This means the purpose is purely for the sake of Allah, to establish His word and His religion, not for personal gain, fame, or tribal loyalty.
The Tafsir (Explanation):
O believers, this is a direct and powerful call from your Lord. It commands you to march forth for Jihad in His cause, regardless of your circumstances. Whether you are young and vigorous or old and experienced, whether you are going out in times of ease and comfort or in times of hardship and difficulty, you are called to respond. Do not let any excuse hold you back. The command is to go forth, both "light" and "heavy" — meaning that no one who is able should remain behind.
Furthermore, the verse instructs you to strive with your wealth and your very lives. Your wealth is to be spent to equip the army, support the cause, and aid those in need. Your lives are to be offered in sacrifice, as you fight with your hands to uphold the truth and defend the oppressed. This is the highest and most complete form of striving — giving everything you possess for the sake of your Creator.
Why would Allah command such a difficult task? The verse answers this with a profound truth: "That is better for you, if you only knew." This sacrifice is not a loss; it is the greatest gain. It is better for you in this world, as it brings honor, strength, and security to your community. And it is infinitely better for you in the Hereafter, as it secures the pleasure of Allah, the forgiveness of sins, and the highest ranks in Paradise. The one who holds back, clinging to his wealth and his life, is the one who truly loses, for he misses out on both the worldly victory and the eternal reward.
So, let this verse awaken a spirit of sacrifice and courage within you. Do not be attached to the fleeting comforts of this world. When the call to truth comes, respond with your whole being. Know that every step you take, every dirham you spend, and every moment of hardship you endure in the path of Allah is an investment that will yield the most magnificent returns. This is the path of the true believers, the path of honor, and the path that leads to the eternal bliss of Jannah.
