Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Khalāq (خَلَاق): One's share, portion, or lot—referring here to the worldly pleasures and desires allotted to a person.
- Khuḍtum (خُضْتُم): To plunge or wade into something—here, it means to engage deeply in falsehood, mockery, and rejection of the truth.
- Ḥabiṭat (حَبِطَت): To become void, invalid, or wasted—referring to deeds that lose all their value and reward.
Explanation of the Verse:
O believers, Allah addresses the hypocrites among you, drawing a striking parallel between their behavior and that of the disbelieving nations who came before them. Those earlier peoples were far greater than you in physical strength, far more abundant in wealth, and had many more children—yet none of these worldly advantages saved them. They indulged in their allotted share of fleeting pleasures, chasing after their desires and becoming engrossed in the temporary comforts of this life. And now, you hypocrites have done exactly the same: you have taken your portion of worldly enjoyment, just as they took theirs, and you have plunged into falsehood—mocking the truth, ridiculing the believers, and doubting the Messenger—just as they plunged into their own forms of denial and arrogance.
But what was the outcome for those who came before? Their deeds became utterly void and worthless, both in this world and in the Hereafter. Their wealth did not benefit them, their children could not protect them, and their strength availed them nothing. They lost everything that truly mattered. And such are the true losers—those who traded the eternal bliss of Paradise for the fleeting illusions of this world, who sold their souls for momentary gratification, and who will awaken on the Day of Judgment to find their hands empty and their efforts in vain.
A Call to Reflection and Sincerity:
This verse is a profound reminder for every soul that reads it: do not be deceived by the glitter of this world, for it is but a passing shadow. The nations of old—with their towering buildings, vast treasures, and mighty armies—have all vanished, and nothing remains of them but stories and ruins. Their strength did not protect them from Allah's judgment, and their abundance did not shield them from His reckoning.
Dear reader, Allah is not asking you to abandon the world entirely, but He is calling you to purify your intentions and to remember that your true home is the Hereafter. Take from this life what is lawful and good, but do not let it consume your heart. Let not your wealth, your children, or your achievements make you forget your Creator. For the one who lives only for this world will lose both worlds, but the one who lives for Allah will find success in both—peace in this life and eternal joy in the next.
So examine your heart today: Are you following the path of those who merely "enjoyed their share" and plunged into heedlessness? Or are you among those who use their time, wealth, and strength to build a lasting legacy for the Hereafter? The choice is yours, and the time to choose is now—before the deeds are sealed and the accounts are settled. May Allah guide us all to sincerity and protect us from being among the losers.
